I met Tom in 7th grade and we where instant friends. I moved away over 20 years ago. We kept in touch sporadically, and visited each other through the years. He was the Best Man at my wedding. One very special thing about Tom is that even though we did not talk on a regular basis I could always get a whacky Halloween message on my answering machine or a call from " Santa" on Christmas day. When ever we talked on the phone I felt as if I was back in 7th grade. Tom just bought out the little kid in me and I always hung up the phone with a smile on my face and full of many great thoughts. I will miss him ! Willie

Tom has been a good friend for 22 years. Although I moved from Minneapolis many years ago, we've kept in touch and traveled together overseas. He was always a bright light and a kick in the pants! He will leave a hole. My condolences and sympathy to his family and friends. Kerry

We met Tom when he dated my sister 20 years ago. Although that relationship didn't work out (so young), Tom's relationship with our family never stopped, and in fact grew. He became good friends with my husband and came to visit us in Australia. Where, by the way, he was commissioned to take photos for the local brothel (one of so many TomTom stories). Seeing TomTom was always a highlight of coming home to Mpls and getting emails of his latest adventures, or just thoughts, was always a delight. He was a rare individual and we will miss him greatly.

My brother and I will miss Tom greatly. We've been neighbors for a couple of years now. I moved out to Minneapolis to branch out and be on my own for the first time. He always made me feel safe here in this new area and was always a joy to see when I was either coming home or going out.
My thoughts are with Tom and his family.

John,
Your dad, your mom, now your brother. I feel for you. I enjoyed visiting your family's farm & playing tetherball. I didn't enjoy it when you & Tom knocked the wind out of me rough-housing in the early seventies. I've thought of your family often as the years have gone by, and wish I could have known you two as we grew older. Now I'll never be able to knock the wind out of Tom.(or was it you, John?)

Tom and I were friends in high school. I remember Tom as being one of the kindest and nicest people I ever met. I thought of him often after high school and always hoped that he was happy and doing well. I'm so sad he is gone and that I never was able to see him again. Goodbye Tom. I miss you and will always remember you fondly. Mary Mikkelson Curoe (Eden Prairie,MN)

Having had very similar upbringing, Tom will always hold a special place in my heart. I was truly amazed by his creativity and envious of hid free spirit. Tom was so generous. He would collect dozens of Happy Meal toys and give them to the kids in Thialand. Some of them have never had even seen a toy. He will be sadly missed by those who had the great opportunity to know him.

My youngest Cousin, I will miss you terribly. I raced home for your entertaining emails from Thailand and your beautiful photos. We, Hecks, are the most intelligent and unique of the species but our lives are far too short. Our look alike fathers gave us many gifts and thankfully, each other. I was always jealous of your talents, travels and the free life you led. I shall miss loving you.

Yo, Tom,
I knew you not that well
But with certain warmth.
On the gig -
I nod,
You smile,
I wink.
Tales, we know,
Are sure to come forth.
Tip me hat
With the tear
To Youse.
Love,
- CD

Tom was a hoot. I used to just run into him randomly, I never knew when I'd see him, but after those run-ins I would always leave with a smile. We had some wild times together back in the day. I'll always remember the sly grin and the flash of those happy gears turning in his head. You could see it in his eyes.

I was in awe of Tom.He would share his photos and stories of his travels in far away places.I found him to be very brave. He worked hard in the studio and was always so kind.Years ago, when I first started working with Tom, he wore sprayed gold shoes....those gold shoes will be hard to fill.

It is always so sad when a free spirit like Tom's goes silent. He made so many people laugh and had such an interesting way of looking at the world that kept me thinking long after I talked with him. My world will have a hole in it, I will miss him very much.

Dear JOhn and Colleen,
We were deeply saddened to learn of Tom's recent passing so soon after the passing of your dear mom, Marian Heck. As a family who has experienced a sudden loss of our daughter just 2 years ago we know the pain you are going through. I encourage you to hold on to the wonderful memories you had with your brother. Although he won't be around to continue the annual hunting trips to Northwestern Minnesota there will be new opportunities to start new traditions with your son's. The bible describes a cloud of wittnesses cheering us on. I believe that this cloud of wittnesses are your mom and dad and your brother Tom cheering you and your family on as you race to the finish line of life. The Gabrielson family will be there with you as your family walks this journey of grief.
sincerely,
Todd Gabrielson
