Thomas Hines Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 10, 2024.
Thomas James Hines, 80, of Haines City, FL, passed away on March 9, 2024 from Alzheimer's disease. He was surrounded by his family who loved and cared for him through his lengthy battle.

Tommy was born in Boston, MA June 26,1943, son of Thomas A. Hines. As a teenager he moved to Randolph MA and graduated from Randolph High School in 1962. He met Chris Anne (Butler) while working together and they fell in love. They were married in May of 1969 and raised four children in Brockton, MA. The Hines household was welcoming and always a flurry of activity.

He was Pack Leader of his son's Cub Scout troop, and as a member of St. Margaret's parish he volunteered as basketball coach. He worked for the New Can Company for 25 years and retired to Florida in 1995, where he developed an unexpected and successful second career with Central Florida Investments and Westgate Resorts. He retired again in 2015, filling his time with theater, music, dancing, as a DJ, and with karaoke events.

He looked after his sick and infirm neighbors and enjoyed participating in other community activities such as calling bingo. A loyal friend and helping hand, Tommy spent more than 40 years mentoring and counseling those in need, through multiple organizations. He was an active member and 4rth degree Knight, of his local chapter of the Knights of Columbus. He also donated his time civically and to organizations like the Red Cross, Special Olympics, Give Kids the World Village, and more. He was proud of where he was from and loved all things Boston. He enjoyed seeing the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and Celtics win multiple world championships.

The love he had for his family was fierce and infinite. He is survived by his cherished wife of 55 years, Chris Anne (Butler), his children Paul (Heather) Hines of Lincoln, ME, Rosemary Hines of Winter Garden, FL, his dedicated caregiver Thomas Hines Jr. of Winter Garden, FL, and Patrick (Natasha) Hines of Boynton Beach, FL. He was a beloved Papa to Connor and Ian Hines, and doting Gampy to Sophia and Kristina Hines. He was an adored Uncle of Stacy Butler Collarusso and Shawn Butler. He was loved by many extended family, and friends.

In honor of his wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial services. Instead, please remember him by caring for a community member or neighbor in need. In lieu of flowers, please consider a charitable donation in his name to one of the following organizations;

Tommy was an outstanding gentleman and brother Knight. He was always their to help and lend a hand. When he became a Knights of Columbus and became a 4th Degree knight, he was so happy to be able to be in the Honor Guard for events both in church and with Special Olympics. Tommy enjoyed playing golf with us Knights at Grenlefe every Saturday morning. He will be missed.

Uncle Tommy was a blessing to have been able to get to know him in such what seems like a very short period of time. I have nothing but smiles and happiness when I think of him even through his battle he did hold a smile well. He is so loved by us and will be greatly missed. A reminder that people can also donate to the hospice house in his name. We love you guys and I am so sorry for your loss. Love Shawn and Brenda.

Tom was the kind of man that brought a smile to your face whenever he walked in to the room because he always looked at you with a mischievous smile so you were just waiting to see what he was going to say! To say my family loved him and we are heartbroken is an understatement. Our condolences to his beloved wife who was my mother hen. What an amazing couple. Rest in peace Tom
