A year has passed since a beloved mentor joined his Creator yet people remembers Tom as fondly as ever. I hope you are having a great time up there, Chief!

It is easy to get lost in a family of 10 kids. I am number 9 in a family of 10 - my brother was the the second oldest. 11 years separated us. I can still remember the day I "met" my brother Greg. He was playing catch with another brother of mine - Casey.

Casey complained about how hard Greg was throwing and walked off. Greg saw me standing nearby and told me to grab a glove and he would teach me how to catch a baseball. I was 8 years old. Needless to say, I stood in front of my fathers wood fence and missed most of what was thrown at me consequently drawing the wrath of my father - my father often remind me that each broken board was .98 cents to replace. But Greg remained patient until I learned to catch. If I was successful at catching a specific number of throws, Greg often rewarded me with a trip to the local Quick Stop for a soda and my favorite flavor of Doritos chips. I sometimes think my brother thought I played catch for the rewards - the reality is, I did it to spend time with him - he was the most important person in my life and I would be nothing without him. He was my teacher, my mentor, and my friend - I am lost without him.

He had the most infectious sense of humor. He made everything seem simple. His character and his commitment to being the best he could be is what sticks with me - and judging from the other comments on this site, it seems to have influenced many others. He is the definition of a servant leader and a true brother in every sense of the word.

His legacy is not what he accomplished in his business career - his legacy is the wonderful and talented children he leaves behind. Josh, Justin, Bryn, and Brett are a testament to his and Anita's deep commitment to building a strong family unit. I don't think Anita realized that when she married my brother, she actually married 9 other siblings. She was, and has been, gracious and patient in sharing Greg with us over the time they were married. I imagine that could not have been easy knowing the various personalities involved!

It is a sad truth that Hoffman's don't typically share their true feelings and God forbid we should express our emotions and tell each other how much we love each other. But I want everyone to know how much I loved my brother Greg and how important he was to all of us. He was the center of our universe and we all rotated around him.

Anita and Family, so very sorry for such a shocking loss. We all had many good times with Tom in California and Nigeria. Even as recently as the week before I heard the news, I was at a dinner with some of my new employees, telling leadership stories that had Tom woven throughout the message. I took so many good things from Tom's leadership that I am able to pass onto our new folks. While working in California and Nigeria with Tom, we had many challenging times, but they were always much better because Tom was around and part of the solution. I will greatly miss him as a colleague and a friend.

Anita and Family, I am so sorry for your loss. I was shocked, and so sorry to hear about Tom's passing. I knew Tom at Chevron from day one and will always treasure my memories of the time we spent together. He was truly special, and I trusted him implicitly. He was a “bud” to me. I will miss corresponding with him – he signed his last email “wingnut”. I can see that twinkle in his eyes just before he would lower the boom on me, and then we would laugh so hard we could hardly stand upright. The light at Chevron is a little dimmer today; but as a friend of ours pointed out to me, it's a little brighter in heaven. I will always be smiling when I think of Tom and that will happen often. So so sorry for your loss.

Tom and I worked together in the Global Procurement organization at the time of the Chevron-Texaco merger. Tom and I also spent five years together in Lagos in the Nigeria SBU. I have many fond experiences, both work and personal, of Tom from our experiences in Nigeria. Tom and Anita were our beach / boat partners during our stay in Lagos. I will truly miss him...he was a great friend. Anita and the Hoffman family are in my wife (Debi) and my prayers.

I worked for Tom early in my career at Chevron. I learned a great deal from him technically but more importantly, he modeled how to have fun even while working hard. I consider myself blessed to have worked with Tom. May he rest in peace and may his lessons and memory live eternal.

In terms of time and space, life's events, and relationships, my wife and I certainly rank as relative newcomers to the life and times of Tom Hoffman. So many others shared and lived so much more. Yet, while "our" relationship was far too brief, we definitely felt a strong kinship with both Tom and Anita. We found them to be kind, very generous, and genuine. Personally, I shared similar passions with Tom for music, sports, and business (in that order). However, I think Tom's #1 was his family and friends. We were so looking forward to the "Hoe Down" in Mendocino next month so that we could all renew our passion for Poco. Tom, you knew how to have a great time and you are truly missed. Anita and family, please accept our deepest sympathies for your loss. "Nothin's Still the Same"

My deepest condolences to Anita and the Hoffman family during this difficult time. This is sudden and shocking.
Friday June13, 2014 we were having lunch with Tom and Desi. As always Tom was sharing a part of him, life experience, anecdotes to help us to overcame the daily challenges in life; not just work. Tom was truly a good guy, mentor, passionate teacher, generous, impactful person a we have ever known. He always strived to get best out of all of us.
THANK YOU Tom.
Your spirit will remain in all you developed, care, bless. Your soul rest in pace.

My deepest sympathies are with your family. I've had the honor and privilege of knowing Tom for the past 30+ years. He was my supervisor when I first became a supervisor, and there could not have been a better role model. With the years, our hair got thinner and our physiques rounder, but Tom's tremendous passion, humor, generosity, and down-to-earth perspectives on the company and life never changed. He was an upbeat, vibrant man with an unforgettable personality and had that unique ability to poke fun at himself to put people at ease. I remember all the irreverant Chevron stories we shared that had us laughing until our sides hurt.

Anita, Josh, Justin, Bret, & Bryn--in all of the time I spent with Tom, it was absolutely clear that all of you were ALWAYS topmost in his mind and heart and what he cherished most. Take care of yourselves, and reach out to us if we can help.

To the Hoffman family, you are in our hearts and prayers. Tom was a great leader and mentor for so many. A quote by Helen Keller " What we have once enjoyed, we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes part of us." May the memories of Tom help you find peace.

To the Hoffman family

I greatly appreciate Tom's leadership in empowering and unleashing the full potential of the organization here in Manila. Tom genuinely valued people; if he had the opportunities, he would have become a mentor and close friend to even more of us here. Nevertheless, he left behind a legacy that will be the light that guides us with steadfast courage in the journey ahead. We will cherish Tom as a distinguished accountant, an admired leader in Finance, and a fun-loving and caring friend. May you draw strength from the many who have fond memories of Tom's well-lived life.

Anita and Family, it was a pleasure to know and work with Tom over the years. He had such an impact on so many of our careers and lives - he will not be forgotten at Chevron. I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad, sad time.

By this time, I thought I would have gotten over the initial shock of hearing about Tom's passing, but since he made such a huge impact to the way we do things here in FSS, his legacy will always be in action, basically in our daily work habits. When things like this happen to good people such as Tom, we can be assured that this is His Divine Will. We, here in FSS Manila share in your deepest of grief. We will continue to pray for you, Mrs. Hoffman and family to help you get on with your lives continuing to trust in the Lord, no matter what.

Anita and family,
Tom hired me onto Chevron nearly 26 years ago and has impacted my life and career with his great advice, integrity and kindness. He took his work very seriously, but was lighthearted about himself and what obstacles we encountered at work. I will honour him by laughing more, and by being generous with my time to benefit others. I hope you find comfort in everyone's messages and in knowing you are in our prayers.

June 20, 2014

To Anita, Bryn, Justin, Josh and Bret -
This is something I never thought I would have to write. Jamie and I are devastated by Tom's passing. It is sad to acknowledge that prophetic line in the song: “Only the good die young.” That refrain keeps repeating in my head. Anita and family: please accept our deepest sympathy and condolences. The messages posted here go a long way to demonstrate the kind of husband, father and person Tom was. People from all over the world - people who worked for Tom or just came to know him - have expressed, in elegant terms, how Tom impacted them and their lives. I can only join them to agree. In time, as you read these posts, I sincerely hope they bring you lasting comfort. Tom and I were colleagues. His creativity and business acumen led to the development of Chevron's first Financial Services Center, which I was privileged to lead. Its success became the blueprint for other centers which followed. To say that he was an outstanding contributor to the company is an understatement. But our friendship extended well beyond the boundaries of Chevron. He was the kind of person that would come to your aid in your time of need. He did that for me, and I will never forget it. After I retired in 2000, I urged him to join his fellow Chevron retirees and go early. In recent years, I urged him a bit more pointedly. He wanted to retire, but given his abilities, and the company's growing needs, job after job of increasing importance and responsibility were offered him - - each putting off retirement just a little bit longer. His dedication to the company outweighed his own personal desire to enjoy a well-earned retirement. In a way, that defined who Tom was - - always thinking of others before himself.
Tom loved the guitar as much as I love the piano. Playing the guitar was surely one of his passions. In our e-mail exchanges over the years, he always addressed me as “Jake” and signed off as “Elwood” - - a reference to those two characters in the “Blues Brothers” movie. It was a personalization that made our continuing friendship truly “special.” My guess is that he made the friendships he had with all the people who have written tributes to him here “special” as well. Such was the measure of the man. I will miss him greatly.

Anita and family-
My deepest sympathy for you and your family for the loss of Tom. Tom and I worked together for many years over his career at Chevron. As with all of us, Chevoids, are career paths would put us together many times. But, my fondest memories with Tom are our days in C-13, Tengiz. Whether it was pizza night or just hanging out after a long day, I learned a lot about Tom and how special his family was to him. Tom was a great co-worker and I am so lucky to have known him.

My deepest condolences to Anita and the Hoffman family during this difficult time. Tom was one of the really good guys - truly. A reliable friend, mentor, and passionate teacher to so many of us. My memories with Tom in Tengiz 20 years ago will stay with me forever, and I will miss you.

Tom was an excellent manager, a wonderful mentor, and an incredibly genuine and caring person. His openness and willingness to share his past experiences and future advice has had an immeasurable impact on many careers and lives, and his enthusiasm for everything from hands-on construction projects to playing the guitar was contagious. I was shocked to hear this news. I feel so honored that I knew him, if only for a brief time of the last couple years. He was so full of energy that I couldn't even keep up with him and I never saw him without a smile on his face. He loved his music and POCO and was so proud that he had a part in bringing the band to the Music Festival. My prayers go out to the family and I know he is sitting back, relaxing and playing a little music up above. He will be sorely missed by everyone that he touched.

To the Hoffman family, my deepest sympathy for your loss. Having a long career at Chevron really comes down to the people you work with and Tom was fantastic in that regard – well liked, humorous, well respected, energetic, and smart. He was very good on personal connection, remembering things about my family even if we hadn't talked in a couple of years. You can be assured that his Chevron family will miss him and honor his memory for a long time to come.

My sincere condolences to Anita and family. It is so sad that Tom departed us so young. I worked with Tom for a few years in the mid-1980's while in Comptrollers. He selflessly drove several of us in his truck into SF each day, where we would park for $3 near the Bay Bridge entrance and walk several blocks to 225 Bush Street. We worked long hours and weekends on the 8th Floor, but we also had a lot of fun in those days - lunches at Hunan & US Restaurant, visits to Tower Records, ribbing one another over our different musical tastes, etc. Tom had a big heart and an amazing wit – one of the sharpest guys I've ever known. My memories of Tom will be everlasting.

Tom was a one of kind, break the mold, guy. He appreciated time spent with family and friends, loved a good laugh and gentle teasing, and never hesitated to lend a helping hand to all. I was fortunate to have had dinner with Tom recently in Perth. We talked at length about family, work, hobbies, and other topics. As the evening was ending we both looked at the beautiful sunset and said, almost simultaneously, "what a great ride [life] it has been". We toasted to that and left for home the next day. I will always cherish that sunset memory.

With time, our tears of sadness will turn to smiles as we think of a "Tomism": a helping hand, a playful tease, a practical joke, or a group gathering. I am blessed to have Tom as my friend.

Tom was a special person, an exceptional leader and a friend to many. He had a large heart and was always willing to advance the career of his employees. We will miss him dearly. Anita and the rest of the family, please accept my condolences.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

To the Hoffman family, I write this with a very heavy heart and the feeling one has when they lose a best freind. Tom's love and caring for so many was truly genuine. I'll personally miss his love of getting together, joking with each other and his laughter that would light up the room. He taught me what a loving family should look like and made me a better person. I will miss him very deeply and at the same time, I thank God for letting me share so many wonderful times with Tom!

Anita, the Lynch Family sends our prayers and love to you and the kids! Tom's spirit will always be a part of me!

Although I did not meet Tom in NMA, I join my friends and colleagues in NMA in sending their condolence. Their messages provide plenty of thoughts and prayers for those Tom left behind.

Not - "how did he die" but - "how did he live". Not - "what did he gain" but - "what did he give". These are the units to measure the worth of a great man, as a man. Dear Tom, you sure impacted lives and you shall be remembered for long.

Our hearts and prayers are with your loved ones.

Dearest Tom (“Junior” as I fondly call you)

I received the news of your death with shock! Still hard to believe you are gone. Our last chat was about your plans and that you may still come to NMA SBU again.
Thanks for the wonderful years of friendship, support, inspiration and fun.
You came, led a life worthy of emulation, had fun and left your mark
May your kind soul rest in perfect peace and may the good Lord give those you have left behind the fortitude to bear this great loss.
Will always have fondest thoughts of you and will miss you a lot.
This is me "Senior" (as you fondly called me) saying Adieu

Tom, I assume you are hanging out with Catfish Hunter and Bob Welch right about now smiling down. There has never (in my experiences) been a manager that has had such a true heart, a joyful heart, a caring heart as you. You were a gift to this earth from God and will be missed.

Dear Tom,
Your integrity will always be remembered longer than your prosperity. I am still in shock because we still spoke about your time in Lagos a few days ago. May the good Lord comfort your family and friends at this point in time. Rest in Perfect Peace.

I am still in shock.... For the privileged time I shared with you, you taught me how to find strength in Character, Discipline and Firmness. You were so tough, yet there was a soft side to you. You still found time to reach out, even after you had left Nigeria, you followed up on my career and found the time to mentor and coach. You were a great leader and wonderful role model Tom. Rest in Peace. My thoughts and prayers are with your family, may they find strength and solace in God's comfort during this trying period of your passing. Adieu Tom......
