Thomas Hruby Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 29 to Dec. 30, 2008.
Thomas J. Hruby, 74, passed away peacefully on Dec. 27 to return to our Lord. Our loving husband, father and grandfather courageously fought a long-term illness. He was an inspiration spiritually, mentally and physically to his family and to all who knew him.

Thomas J. Hruby was born in St. Joseph, Mo., on Aug. 21, 1934, to V. George Hruby and Katherine H. (Teresinski) Hruby, who have both predeceased him. He married Joan Marie Fisher on Oct. 20, 1956, and they have four children, Jodie K. Hruby, of Brussels, Belgium, Jill M. Hruby (husband, Stewart Griffith), of Livermore, Calif., John T. Hruby (wife, Cindy), of Fremont, Mich., and Thomas J. Hruby Jr. (wife, Rebecca), of Cartersville, Ga.; and 12 grandchildren. A brother, George Bernard, died in infancy. He is survived by two sisters, Dolores Ann Schoeneck (husband, Thomas J.) of St. Joseph, Mo., and Naples, Fla., and Mary Joan Sova (husband, James J.) of Hampton, Va.

Mr. Hruby graduated from Christian Brothers High School in St. Joseph, Mo., and received his degree from General Motors Institute (now Kettering University) in Flint, Mich. General Motors Institute is a cooperative education facility, and Mr. Hruby co-oped at the Defiance, Ohio, Plant of Central Foundry Division, General Motors Corp. (now GM Powertrain). After obtaining his degree, he served in various supervisory positions at the Defiance Plant before being promoted to the divisional offices in Saginaw, Mich., as a market analyst. He subsequently was promoted to various sales and marketing positions, one of which required that he maintain offices in Detroit-area GM plants. At that time, he lived in Ann Arbor, Mich. He was promoted to sales and marketing managerial positions and moved back to Central Foundry's Divisional Offices in Saginaw in the mid 1970s. He opted to retire from the executive roll of General Motors in 1988. It was at that time that he made his home in Florence, Ala., where he was engaged in consulting

activities.

Mr. Hruby was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Florence and active in Knights of Columbus Council 3989 and Fourth Degree Assembly 1688. He also served in the Alabama State Knights of Columbus organization. Mr. Hruby had been a member of the board of directors of the Northwest Alabama Boys and Girls Clubs, of which he was president for three years. He received the gold medallion from the National Boys and Girls Clubs of American for leadership and service to the organization. He was a proud member of the Christian Brothers of the Midwest Associates and the Catholic Businessmen and Professional Association of Birmingham, Ala. He also was a longtime member of the American Foundrymen's Society.

Visitation and mass will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1111 E. College St., Florence, AL 35630. The visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, with the prayer service at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, with the Rev. Andy Sullivan, pastor, the Rev. Abott Victor Clark and Msr. Michael V. Sexton officiating.

Pallbearers will be JB Taylor, Richie Gaskell, Gerry Clarke, Dan Beene, Lowell Held, John Dupuis, Derick Franck and Tom Wachter.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Scoeneck, Jim Sova, Bob McGovern, Jim Olenick, Mike Tahy, Richard Incontro, Don Wilde, the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Harold Lewis and Bill Dickinson.

Special thanks to Dr. John Bartmess, Dr. Antony Kalliath, the doctors at Vanderbilt Medical Center Department of Urology and Ingram Center Oncology. The tremendous support and generosity by our local church family and friends has been a blessing and inspiration.

Memorials to be provided to Knights of Columbus Council 3989, Vanderbilt Medical Center and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The online guest book may be signed at timesdaily.com/obituaries.

Although I could not be there for Tom's Services I was in spirit. Ever since our HS 50th class reunion in 02 I have enjoyed keeping in touch with Tom and you . He was such a unique person and always seemed to maintain a positve outlook . Even in spite of his illness he always mananged to express concern when one of our classmates needed prayers and support. Always willing to help and listen. When I would not hear from him he would soon let me know that he had a reason . Well now the airwaves from him will be silent but he will be remembered by all of us who knew him and were touched by his life. Do look forward to keeping in touch with you Joan and having you visit next time you make it to FL. Much love and prayers , your ole CSH classmate.....

To the Hruby Family,
We were neighbors of yours in Saginaw, MI back in the '60s. We have fond memories of you and are sorry for your loss. I remember babysitting Jody, Jill, and John and hope all of you are well. Now I live just north of Traverse City, MI after living in Coronado, CA for over 30 years. My mom and sisters, Sue and Lorri, also live here. My brother, Frank, is still in CA. My mother gets the Saginaw News and recognized the name. All of us extend our sympathy for the loss of your husband and dad.

My dad thought a lot of Mr. Hruby and really enjoyed working with him in the KofC. Mr. Hruby was just always so nice, even when my dad would mess around with him and pronounce the "H" in Hruby.
May all your fond memories comfort you at this time.

During this time of mourning, I would like to express my sincere condolence at the loss of your loved one. May you find comfort in persistent prayers, as “the peace of God that excels all thought will guard your heart and your mental powers.” [Phil. 4:7] I certainly hope that the help God can give at this time will make a difference.

Joan, I am truly sorry to hear that Tom died. He was a special person. I worked with him in Saginaw at Central Foundry's central office. He always has a smile and encouragement and some days a hug. A very special guy, but sometimes he smoked those darn cigars. :) My sincere condolences to you and your children. He will surely be missed.

Dear Joan, We wish to express our deepest sympathy upon Tom's death.

Remembering a good neighbor - Canterbury Drive - especially July 4th, Halloween and the tough winters. Can't forget the UofM football fan.

Even though words can be so little comfort, may the memories of shared joys help you during this time of sorrow.

Our love and prayers

Our thoughts and prayers are with Joan and the family. We know these last years have been difficult ones, the type that can be sustained only by faith. Bob has known Tom for more than 70 years, since those days on South 24th Street in St. Joseph. Charlene, Tom and Joan were in the same high school graduating year.

Joan,

My friendship with Tom goes back to 1956 when I started at GMI, co-oping at the Defiance Plant. Tom was working in the Shipping and Recieving dept. at the time. He took me under his wing and showed me the ropes. Tom was without a doubt one of the nicest and finest men that I have had the pleasure of meeting in my lifetime.

Mrs. James R. (Jeannie) Prater, Jr.

December 30, 2008

Dear Joan--Although I don't believe we ever had the pleasure of meeting you, we always enjoyed Tom's visits to our office. He and my late husband, Jim Prater always found plenty to talk about. Tom was one of those patients that we always looked forward to seeing--he always had a joke or story to tell and was a pleasure to talk and work with. I so deeply appreciated the note I got from him after Jim passed away in October--it meant a great deal to me and Jim's children. I pray God's richest blessing go with you and your family as you go through this time and that you are able to find peace and joy in the sure knowledge that Tom is at home in his heavenly Father's arms, his body is free of pain and earthly cares and that you know you will again be with Tom. He loved you and his children and grandchildren dearly.

Mrs. Hruby,
I am so sorry for your loss. I know that Mr. Hruby put up a good fight. I have been thinking about you both since I left Regions in May. I always looked forward to seeing Mr.Hruby come in the bank and it wasn't until he got sick that I got to finally meet you. He was one of my favorite customers. It was a good 7 years. My thoughts and prayers are still with you.
