Dear Eva,

I just saw the memorial notice. I worked with Tom for a few years and remember his passion for collecting comic books and movies. It was a pleasure to know and work with him.

Eva, I hadn't heard about Tom's passing until I saw the Memorium in the RMN today - a year after his death. My ex-husband, Gary Hoover, worked for you and Tom on many home improvement jobs - I think you supported him for at least 6 months!

I worked with Tom @ CH2M Hill for about 13 years and always enjoyed his sense of humor and his down to earth attitude. He truly was a wonderful human being.

I'm sorry for your loss and pray you find comfort knowing so many people care.

We were so sorry to learn about Tom's passing away. We who lives in Sweden are distant relatives of Tom.

Tom's ancestories came from Sweden. My grandfathers oldest sister Shopie was grandmother of Lila Huntsinger.

God bless you all in your great mouring and loss.

Lov and prayers from us

We have met Lila and Del in Raymond once in 1999, it is an unforgetable

Dear Eva,

You don't know me but I've been friends with Del and Lila for over 20 years.(my husband and I cut their hair). I just heard of this heartbreaking news and wanted you to know that Lila has shared many stories of her children with me over the years. She has described stories so beautifully that it has made an impression on me of what Tom must have been like. Although I have never met him I know that he was a wonderful husband, son, father, grandfather and friend. His parents are so proud of him and her stories always reflected their love for him.

In a certain way I share your loss and my heart goes out to you and your family. You're in my prayers.

Dear Eva:

I was saddened by the unexpected news about Tom's passing away. All the old memories kept coming back, particularly as Tom was assigned to me as a young Resident Engineer on a Cowlitz County, WA, landfill. Already then he has shown original thinking, sense of humor, and a real interest in the work which was somewhat below his actual qualifications.

God bless you and the family. Let him rest in peace.

Thank you - everyone - for your caring words and prayers. Hearing from you is helping me and the family through the pain of Tom's sudden death and your thoughfulness will always be remembered.

We buried Tom last Tuesday, October 9th. The mass, burial and banquet were full of music and songs from Tom's life, and we did a lot of sharing of memories and stories involving Tom. Oh - the stories - from how he obtained car parts for his GTO (through Midnight Auto Supply), to hiding liquor in the washing machine when the cops raided a party, to trying to explain to Sean (his eldest grandson) the proper names of certain body parts and their uses!

His memory jar is full and the many gorgeous flowers that many of you sent filled the vigil, church and Pittock Mansion with sweet scents. His tie collection was set out for people to keep one as a remembrance. It was great to see folks wearing them - from Kyle (Tom's 3 year old grandson) to the ladies of his high school gang (the Back to the Beach Club). Arnie (childhood friend of 50 years and cohort in pranks never discovered before the Tom and Arnie duo) and Rick (dear friend from high school) gave the eulogies. The charties are grateful for all the donations that are rolling in.

After much exploring, I found the perfect site to lay Tom (or so I thought). Everything he would want...rolling hills, deer, trees on either side, well planned transportation access that allows for various other modes in the future, lots of room, and sunrays at sunset. It wasn't until his actual burial that we discovered that this perfect spot sits among the graves of over 300 nuns! Yes - he's got them all from Sister Alice to Mother Zelda all around him. Many got a chuckle out of this, including Tom's first wife Linda! At the house blessing, a special prayer was offered for those nuns - that they would have plenty of patience with Tom and the ability to withstand his manner of speech and his version of the sign of the cross (spectacles, testicles, wallet and watch!). I just figure that karma was at work here and I can be rest assured that he's being well taken care of....

Other touching moments that we'll always remember include Sean kissing Tom's casket and saying, while waiving, "Bye bye Papa"; the Back To The Beach Gang (all nine of the guys) as pall bearers; Tom's sister using the CH2M Birthday cane, Rusty (Tom's furried friend) attending the burial and playing with all the many children; the absolutely beautiful day (clear skies, warm, full of sunhine); the gorgeous piano music Jody (Tom's duaghter) made throughout the day's sevices; and Amazing Grace played by bagpipes up the hill from Tom's grave.

All of this brings home what is really important...

1. Always take the time to give that hug!

2. There is an afterlife.

3. Taking care of each other is what it is all about. Nothing else compares. Period.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do and will let you know when I know. In the meantime, thank you, be happy, and remember those hugs..

Love,

Eva

Tom and I became E-Mail friends when he sold me his collection of Spider-Man comics several months ago. It meant a great deal to him that another collector had recieved them. I cherish them even more now than I did then. Tom and I corresponded regularly after that, and I considered him a friend, though we never met in person. My deepest heartfelt sympathies.

I was saddened to learn about Tom when we returned from our trip to Eastern Washington tonight. Tom was a good friend and colleague at CH2M Hill for more than twenty-five years. We worked our way through times of stress and then had great times with fun and laughter. I always new Tom as a very smart person with a strong emphasis on caring for other people. I know he had great love for you and the rest of his family. Tom and I shared some great moments and times and were always helping one another when either of us needed help. Tom was a leader in the transportation industry and will be missed. I know that I will miss him as a friend.

I will be keeping you in my prayers.

Mike and Nancy Mariano

October 8, 2001

Eva, our prayers are with you as you go about celebrating Tom's life and the people's lives you and he touched in so many different ways.

Thanks to Tom, I have long possessed a stress ball that makes the sound of broken glass when it hits a wall (or floor). Lord knows, I have almost worn it out. Tom was there for me throughout my CH2M Hill career--always pushing me to new challenges. Only Tom could have talked me into a 3 year assignment in Chicago..and he was there when times got difficult in the end.

Eva, your rock solid committment to Tom and your positive outlook on life --both its good and poorly dealt hands- is an inspiration to us all. I hope all these notes give you the strength, love, and comfort you need to get through this difficult time. See you tomorrow.

Eva,

While I only worked with and knew Tom for a short period of time I felt as though we had connected in a special way. I came to know a man who was immensely proud of his family, his professional accomplishments, and the "smartest woman he knew". I also came to know Tom as a man who was always willing to offer his mentorship and never afraid to seek the expertise of others when he needed to. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and the family. If there is ever anything you need please don’t hesitate to ask.
