Thomas M. Long

Thomas M. LONG Passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, April 27, 2003, ending a 14-month battle against Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. A true "Labor Day" baby, Tom was born September 6, 1948 in Rapid City. The family moved to Oregon prior to his first birthday where he was raised in the eastern Portland suburbs. After graduating David Douglas High School he enrolled at Portland State as a music major. His college studies were cut short when he enlisted in the Army. Following basic training at Fort Lewis he spent his three-year tour of duty in an Army band stationed in Japan. While in the service, he completed his college studies via correspondence. In addition to playing clarinet, Tom was also an accomplished pianist, and after his discharge began vocal training in Portland. Though he ultimately decided against continuing operatic training, he became very active in the Portland performing arts. He performed in several community theater productions and sang with the Choral Arts Ensemble. He was a founding member of the Portland Gay Men's Chorus and became and remains a subscriber to Seattle Opera. In 1983 Tom was introduced to square dancing and quickly became an enthusiastic and devoted participant. It was through square dancing he met his life partner. In March, 1985, Tom relocated to Seattle so they could build a life together. In Seattle Tom worked for eight years at Generra Sportswear before taking a position with the King County Roads division. At the time of his death he was serving as a Business and Finance Officer. Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Sylvia. He is survived by his partner, JW Paulson, his father, Meryl, of Hemet, CA, and elder twin brothers David (and wife Sandy) of Gresham, OR, and Donald (and wife Anne) of Richmond, VA. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and other relatives, and many square dance friends across the country. A memorial service is being planned.
