Rest in peace my friend!

I first met Professor Markey when I was his student in Gothic in my second year of graduate work at U. Michigan Ann Arbor. Even though I was an outsider since most of my studies were in comparative Romance linguistics, he was very encouraging and graciously overlooked my lack of knowledge of comparative Germanic. His wonderful teaching in this course not only led me to take another course with him in the history of linguistics (and he published our final papers in a volume that I proudly referred to as containing my first academic publication), but it stimulated an interest in me to delve further into Germanic and Indo-European philology and linguistics. He was kind enough to act as a member of my doctoral thesis committee. I remember him as a brilliant scholar, inspiring teacher and kind friend who played a major role in my eventual career path, and I regret that I only recently learned of his passing. I am grateful for his influence in my life. Requiescat in pace.

During Tom's days in the Department of Linguistics at Michigan, we were colleagues for many years, and became close friends. He published two of my books from his Karoma Publications. I felt very sad when he left Michigan, and then we did not see each other ever again. But I still remember the intensity with which he would argue his case. Madhav M. Thomas was a great friend. We have had numerous conversations, jokes, laughs. We would talk every Fridays. He had a lot of stories, even some secrets in his life he shared with my husband JD when they went fishing in Key West. He had some fun there. I saw him in Tucson about 3 times where he took me to the Gem Show, on the Mexican border, etc. His knowledge was endless. He went to places you could never imagine. His journeys, whether work-related or fun, are countless. I am still missing him very much. All my thoughts go to Patty as well. Thomas, my friend, you will be missed for ever. So Long my friend.

I first met Tom as we worked together on a very rush linguistic project. This was in 2007. A successful collaboration which turned into a friendship colored with a lot of salt. Every Friday we would talk on the phone. I sincerely miss our weekly words. Tom may you find peace now. Love. P

Oh Patty I am so sorry to hear about Tom. I felt him very tired last time I talked to him. Please receive our best condolences for our friend from JD and myself. He will be missed.

Tom and I were college roommates. After graduation, though, we went our separate ways, only reconnecting during this past summer. My recollection of Tom, then, is of a much young man.
What set Tom apart - in very good ways - was that he possessed a brilliant mind, coupled with wide-ranging curiosity and tremendous intellectual drive and focus. Along with this went kindness and a really neat (but sometimes quirky) sense of humor. I treasure my memories of him, and I was lucky to have known him. The world has lost a truly remarkable individual.

Tom was an incredibly fascinating man with a total passion for life, adventures, words and primarily Pat and Ty. His life was extraordinary because he made it that way. The void is there for this world yet I see him traversing the glorious next journey with the excitement of a child. My condolences are deeper than words.

Remembering So Much, Let So Little
We walked together as brothers
His a shuffled pace totaling
Many unnumbered miles
Remembering so much, let so little
Have known him for the last ten years
Reminding me of my brother,
It seemed like a lifetime
Remembering so much, let so little
When we first met
We were in a hiking group
For me, all were strangers
Remembering so much, let so little
He had that something
We all feel but can´t explain
As with the wistfulness of used books
Remembering so much, let so little
Hiking dusty trails, stirred only by our steps,
A soft breeze unable to lift
The dust above our boots
Remembering so much, let so little
Sharing a love of the wild
To hear sounds, see vistas
In the desert and sky islands
Remembering so much, let so little
He was born with a feel for the moment
Making use of the incidentals
Whether invited or not
Remembering so much, let so little
An eye for beauty and form
Where nothing is perfect
And everything is perfect.
Remembering so much, let so little
Always ready to go farther afield
Looking for new trails - such as
The Hidden Pasture Trail
Remembering so much, let so little
Meticulously researching new adventures
Was a hobby driven by the belief
One knows the country through direct contact
Remembering so much, let so little
Possessing a diverse love of life
Sharing stories of youthful conquests
As the sunsets only to be replaced by a full moon
Remembering so much, let so little
Dare not wave the punctual tissue of farewell
He would reply with an insouciant shrug
Therefore, I drink to you, my brother
Remembering so much, let so little
For this is a path we will all take
On the Hidden Pasture Trail
It´s all part of nature´s plan
Remembering so much, let so little
