It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Thomas Ray Massey on May 29, 2022. Tom was born in hot, humid Miami, Florida to a caring family who nurtured his love of the Lord, classic cars, dark chocolate, and strong coffee. He was a big man, whose body had to be large enough to fit his gigantic heart. And while he generously shared his heart with so many people, it really belonged to his love of his life, Carol, his two daughters, Yvonne and Tarae, and his grandchildren, Catherine and Alex.
Tom worked hard to provide for his family and managed the local AutoZone in Shelby for many years. He cared deeply about his work and the people that he managed and served. He was a strong, gentle man who led with honesty and integrity.
Tom had a gift for storytelling and identifying the year, make and model of American cars from the 50's, 60's, and 70's. He had a wonderfully goofy and smart sense of humor and when he smiled his eyes would light up his face. He was an inventive and creative problem solver who could fix just about anything.
Tom is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of almost 51 years, Carol Massey; his daughter Regina Tarae Czerr of Gastonia,NC; daughter and her husband Yvonne Jean Mauney and Jonathan Mauney of Kernersville, NC; his grandchildren Alex Mauney and Catherine Czerr; and his sister Ruby Sue Massey of Miami Florida. We love you and we will miss you, Pop Pop.
Funeral service will be held 3:00PM Friday June 3, 2022 at the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home & Crematory. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service frim 2:00PM - 3:00Pm. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Shelby, NC.

Carol, TaRae, Yvonne and Family,
Our hearts are heavy and we are so very sad to hear of Tom's passing. What a terrific friend he was to Henry & me for 32+ years. We go way back; especially Henry and Tom from the Autozone days. He was a great man, a giant of a man, but he had the kindest heart! He was a wonderful husband, father & grandfather to you all and Henry & I are thankful to have had Tom's friendship .. we always had the best reunions and the warmest welcomes when we reconnected!! We have so many wonderful memories to cherish .. all motorcycle rides, AZ gatherings, shooting guns, stories about dogs & cats, dinners, desserts & drinks with us and also with Henry's parents, the talks about cars, cars, and more cars and just enjoying each other's company.
Please know that as the days pass, we love you all and are here to support you anyway you need.
We pray that our Heavenly Father embraces each of you as you grieve the loss of Tom and brings you the peace & comfort that only he can and that we are reminded, "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.".
