Mr. Thomas Stonewall McElwain, 85, was born on January 21, 1931 in Jennings, Florida and passed away peacefully on October 4, 2016. He was the son of Lewis E. and Minnie Herring McElwain. Thom attended school in Hamilton County and was a member of the Jennings High School Class of 1949. He went on to serve his much beloved country for four years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and left with an Honorable Discharge. He moved to Lake City in 1963 and worked with the Florida Department of Transportation as a Construction Inspector for more than twenty-five years. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. His hobby was building bird houses. Thom built and hung more than 200 bird houses throughout the forest and also enjoyed constructing and giving away tree stands. Thom attended and was a Charter Member of the Fellowship Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Essie; and two stepsons, Hubert "Matt" Mathews and Duane Beeche.
Mr. McElwain is survived by his youngest brother, John (Betty) McElwain of Valdosta, Georgia; his step daughter-in-law, Louise Mathews of Jacksonville, Florida; and his two grandsons, John Mathews of Jacksonville, Florida and Dale Beeche of Live Oak, Florida.
Funeral services for Mr. McElwain will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Friday, October 7, 2016 in the Fellowship Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Cannon officiating assisted by Bro. Dwight Law. Interment with Military Honors will immediately follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 Thursday evening at the funeral home. Our deepest sympathy to Mr. Tom's Family. Heaven gained another Deacon from Fellowship Baptist Church. My Dad and Mr. Tom were friends for many, many years. Ms. Essie was one of my Mothers Dearest friends. I remember when I was a little girl and would go with my parents to visit, Mr. Tom had an awesome Airplane Collection. I Loved them both.
