"What would I like to say about Tom?"
Oh, wow. I was telling a friend about him the other day when we were in Fells Point, right by the water. His favorite area. Mine as well. He introduced me, a Baltimore native, to local music legends I had totally missed out on. Our mutual love of music, reading, and Baltimore enabled us to click right when we met, and we become fast friends.
Each of us would apologize for "babbling", as the conversations never seemed to end. We would have chatted late into the night on multiple evenings, however, his dedication to his colleagues and patients was such that he always had a "cut-off" time for heading home and getting proper rest.
What is amazing is that I only had the privilege of meeting Tom on New Year's Day 2019. I feel like he impacted my whole life in the short span of time we were friends. It was so nice to meet a genuinely NICE person!!
He loved his family, his profession, music, reading, and his friends. He was so faithful that he got me motivated to making Mass a part of my life again. With both of us having Jesuit education in our backgrounds we shared similar philosophies and approaches to life. But I will tell you I have never met anyone I admire the way I did him, and I doubt I ever will again.
From the get-go it was clear he was FIERCELY devoted to his children. He would do anything for them, and especially was laser-focused on providing for their future. The amount of work he put in was staggering, but he just shrugged it off as doing what was necessary as a dad.
To Tom's family and loved ones, you are in my thoughts and prayers all the time.
There is still a great big hole in Baltimore without you, "Dr. Tom"! I know you are resting with God. We miss you, and we always will.

Missing Tom all the time. That smile, the sparkle in his eyes, his funny stories. Our interesting chats about books, school, work, people, the various places he lived, families, and more.
We think of him and bring him up in conversation, and I feel his presence when I attend performances by musicians he introduced me to.
I thought his family would like to know that Tom is always in our hearts here in Baltimore. And that I keep the kids and all his loved ones in my prayers. (I really miss his Daddy and Michael stories of their adventures at the zoo and other Baltimore locations).
I still think I am going to get to Fells Point and run into him. It's a sad shock each time realizing that I won't. I will raise a silent toast to his memory the next time I am there. :) #WeMissDrTom

I am deeply saddened to hear of Tom's passing. Tom was a great resident at BIDMC. I remember his bright eyes and his laugh. I am not surprised but certainly impressed by all his accomplishments in the years since we were residents in Boston. I would like to extend my condolences to his family. Tom will be missed by many.

I remember Tommy from elementary school at Hatherly in Scituate MA. Tommy always contributed to my classroom guidance lessons with thoughtful, caring comments. I knew he was destined for greatness! He had true compassion for others and I am happy that he was able to use these skills in the medical profession. We are all better people for having known him. They don't come any better!
Peace to him and his loving family. I am sure his spirit will live on and he will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved him.

Tom was a resident at BIDMC when I was Chief of Vascular Surgery. I was exceedingly proud when he told me he had chosen vascular surgery for his career. He was an extraordinary surgeon and a better person. He exemplified what all surgeons should be. I was deeply saddened by his untimely passing. Please accept my condolences. I will miss him.

Rest in Peace, Dr. Monahan.
POEM:
By Mary Elizabeth Frye
"Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die."

My deepest sympathies to all who knew and loved Tom. He is definitely one of the most special people I ever met.
He made me smile and we shared a ton of laughs (especially because we were both so terrible at figuring out texting, emojis, etc.!) and bonded over a deep appreciation for the Baltimore music scene. It baffled him how more locals don't seem to recognize how lucky they are by the riches offered in our small city.
He was a true gift to the world with his kindness and intelligence, plus his dedication to improving health and saving lives.
It's impossible to list all the things I admired about him here on this page-if I had to narrow it down I would say his faith and his love for his children, in addition to his professionalism and desire to be the best surgeon and researcher he could. There is SO much more.
I was lucky to know Tom, and I already miss him terribly. Rest in peace, my friend.

As I finish my Annual Training here at 29 Palms my heart is saddened after hearing about Dr. Monahan. As a Nurse Manager for the Cardiac Cath Lab at the Baltimore VA I remember Dr. Monahan being kind with a gingerly spirit. He was always pleasant and decent to work with. You will be missed my friend. Thank you for your service to our Nation's Veterans and it was certainly my pleasure to serve then with you.

Words cannot describe how saddened I am to lean of Tom's passing. He was one of the few people I remained in contact with after medical school. I last saw him in June when I was in Baltimore for a conference. It was clear that Tom's optimism, sense of purpose, and faith in the Lord remained strong, despite many challenges having come his way. He was someone I respected and admired for his passion for medicine and his genuine love of others. He will be missed by so many. May he rest in peace in the presence of our Lord.
