I just wanted to tell you how truly sorry I was to learn of Tom's passing. So many of my memories of growing up include the Murphy's, and as I think back, I smile as I think of your dad, husband, father-in-law, friend and more. There were always many lessons to learn, and I remember when he would hold family meetings. I think that is one of my strongest and most clear memories, was just how important his family always was to him. Everything he did was for his family, whether to teach a lesson, to provide and encourage as a role model, to want the best for each and every one of you. Please know that I keep you all in my heart and prayers. May God bring all of you peace.

Tom was truly a legend in the DC real estate community. Many of us learned so much from him, and it was always a pleasure to work with him on a transaction. He was truly a gentleman and we will all sorely miss his wit and his knowledge. My sincere condolences to his family.

Marcella, Mike, Kevin, Tom Jr, Dolores, and Danny:

This is a day we all hope will never come; it's hard to find words that might offer a measure of comfort and support in grieving your loss, and the bright and shining presence we all have lost in our lives. I used to call him “coach”; it was a term of endearment. And I will remember him as an Air Force officer who served his country faithfully and well, as a scholar and a prodigious writer who thought deeply and wrote with insight and conviction about the social needs of his time, as a life-long public servant who skillfully and ably influenced the evolution of the executive service of the federal government and changed it for the better, as a self-made and successful businessman proud of his ability to help people, which was the defining virtue of his life in so many ways. Devoted husband and father, proud grandparent, a teacher who always made time for some needed advice and help to his students, some long after they had taken their degree, a mentor, a friend to many, a man for others. His life mattered, and he used it in the best possible way -- to make better the lives of those who came his way. May the light of heaven shine upon him, and all who loved him.
