Helen Hahn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 10, 2010.
HAHN, Helen 19362010 Helen was a woman who loved maps. The first thing you would hear her say was I have to get a map!! Helen also loved books, mysteries were her favourite. she was never happier than when she had a new book to devour. We have awarded Helen the trophy for having the most maps and books in the space provided in her condo. Helen started drawing at a young age and over the years worked her way through oil, acrylic, watercolor, pencil, calligraphy and photography. She became an accomplished artist. her art is appreciated by many happy owners. Helen was a world traveller. Her favorite places were southern France, Austrailia and the golden wheat fields of Saskatchewan. Helen was a serious bird watcher. She enjoyed field trips while keeping track of the migration routes. It was a challenge to have her at the wheel of a car because if she spotted a bird while driving there was a chance you would end up in the ditch. You did not phone or visit Helen while the Tour de France or a baseball game was being telecast on T.V. One of her nephews had the misfortune to be married during the Tour de France. Where was aunty Helen during the wedding reception? Helen was very active as a volunteer for the Vancouver Opera Guild. She happily collected out of town performers at the airport, took them to their hotel taking the opportunity to make many new friends from far away places. Helen loved her years working at UBC. She loved the academic life, studying, researching, helping students, and always learning all her life. UBC plans to fly their flags at halfmast on Tuesday August 17th the day of the memorial reception. Helens many friends will tell you she was the most nurturing, helpful, loyal and loving friend. Helen's major work was the genealogy of her family history. Over fifty years she researched the family names of Hahn and Lengert. She was able to trace the history back to the 17th Century. Helen was the devoted beloved sister and survived by June Crowe, Regina, SK, Sylvia and Don Whyte, North Bay. ON, Rick Hahn, Castlegar, BC, Bruce and Jenny Hasselbach, Chilliwack, BC. She leaves seven nieces and nephews and six great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Barbara Hasselbach and nephew Scott Hasselbach. Helen's ashes will be scattered over her golden wheat fields of Saskatchewan. Memorial Reception will be held Tuesday, August 17th 2-4 PM at the Old Barn Community Centre 6308 Thunderbird Blvd. (on the University Campus) Vancouver, V6T 1Z4. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to a charity of your choice in memory of Helen.

I have known Helen since I started at UBC in 1989. We worked very closely on the 25 Year Club committee as well as other projects - I loved her sense of humour and her energy. Even after retirement, she continued to contribute to life at UBC. She will be sorely missed.

I have such wonderful memories of Helen as a woman with a big heart and a big mind, always something new to report and so interested in everything and everyone around her. I was fortunate to have her in my life as my Aunt June's sister (does that make her an "aunt-in-law"?). I'm grateful that I knew her, and celebrate her memory.
