Thomas Prue Obituary

Published by The Middletown Press from Sep. 27 to Sep. 28, 2012.
Thomas Prue Sr., 87, beloved husband of Nannette Prue of Middletown, died Sept. 26, 2012, at Middlesex Hospital. He was the son of the late Adelard "Delroy" and Blanche (Hudon) Prue.
He was born on Nov. 28, 1924, in Rockville but grew up in Rockfall. He moved permanently to Middletown when he married Jennie Morello. After her passing, he remarried Nannette (Hartigan) Giesbrant.
He was a member of the 110th Anti-Aircraft Battalion from 1943 to 1945, stationed in Europe. He participated in the Invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach, D-Day Plus One. He participated in five major battles in the European theater and in the Battle of the Bulge.
He worked as a maintenance millwright at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in Middletown for over 30 years before retirement. Tom was active in sports most of his life either playing, coaching, or in a volunteer capacity. He played baseball for Middlefield in the Shoreline Baseball League as a shortstop and pitcher, and played as a defenseman for many area hockey teams. He coached the Middlefield Ahern Whalen baseball team to many league and all star championships, and coached (along with Art Hatje Sr.) the Bernie O'Rourke Little League All Stars to their first two District nine championships.
In the 1960s, Tom, and his brother Nel, coached the Middlefield Tiger midget football teams, leading them to 3 consecutive league titles. In 1967, he (along with Phil Cashman), established the first Middletown Pop Warner Midget football teams, the Cougars (north end) and the Mustangs (south end). Tom and his brother Nel coached the Mustangs from 1967-1970.
In 1971, he was hired as a curator at the newly built Wesleyan University hockey rink. With the opening of the Wesleyan rink, Tom was able to introduce ice hockey and figure skating to hundreds of area youths. He established the "Rink Rats", a group of youngsters who worked at the rink, and their reward would be valuable ice time. Many of the rink rats went on to become excellent high school, prep, and college hockey players. He was also influential in creating Midget hockey in Middletown beginning in 1971.
Tom's passion for sports led him to volunteer at many athletic events. He would spend his spare time refereeing youth hockey games, helping out at high school track meets, but most notably he was in charge of the "Chain Gang," responsible for holding the yardage markers at Xavier and Middletown high school football games. Calling it "the best seat in the house" he held the sticks for close to 30 years.
Tom's other passion was bluegrass music. He played professionally with the "Country Cousins" and he has been proclaimed by many as Connecticut's "bluegrass father." He spent many weekends traveling to bluegrass festivals around New England and New York all the while leading groups of "pickers" through many hours of spontaneous picking sessions, enjoying another one of his passions – beer. He also taught guitar lessons for a number of years.
Besides his wife 32 years, he is survived by two daughters, Michele Augliera and her husband Anthony of East Haven, and Rosanne Tine and her husband Theodore of Middletown, and his son Thomas Prue Jr. and his wife Cynthia of Middletown. He also leaves behind four sisters, Dorothy Tyc and Virginia Konefal of Rockfall, Patricia Damiata of Cromwell, and Lorraine Swenson of North Carolina, and his brother Robert Prue of Tampa Florida. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Kelly Parcesepe, Jenny Mathews, Thomas Prue III, and Kenneth Prue, as well as four great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his step daughter Patti Greco and her sons Jordan Greco and Justin Greco. He was predeceased by his brothers Bernard, Nelson, Leonard, Charles, Donald, William, and Arthur, and his sisters Eileen Day and Delores Prue.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown. Burial with military honors will be held at the State Veterans Cemetery. Friends may call at Biega's Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.
Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Weiss Hospice Unit c/o Dept. of Philanthropy, 28 Crescent St., Middletown, CT 06457.

Tom was in icon at New England bluegrass music festivals. His late night jams were always fun. You learned a lot with Tom. I remember him scowling at me at one of his jams when I play a 2 minor 7 chord. He just stopped everything, looked at me from behind the Coleman lantern and asked" "Was that a minor chord?" I admitted it was and he scrunched up his face in clear distate. "Just play the 4 chord next time," he said and there was humor and love in it. And he was right. Tom's jams attracted lots of folks who were just learning to play, and the 4 chord worked just fine under his tarp.

At one point when Traver Hollow was still young I was over at Tom's site just singing and picking among a few of us, and he stopped me. "You're singing too loud," he said. "I know what you're trying to do, but it isn't about being loud. Just be you," he said, "Just sing like you." I don't think a young musican could have received better guidance.

I enjoyed being at Tom's jams about as much as anything I did in Bluegrass music. He took a liking to me and had an open, ever-ready smile that I will miss.

Heartfelt condolences to Nan and his family.

Patty, I didn't know that Mr. Prue was your stepdad! I used to skate at Wesleyn Skating Rink and that is where I met Mr. Prue. I have very fond memories of him.
Sorry for your loss. Please tell you mom I'm thinking about her.

To my poppa who I will never forget. We were so lucky to have such a great, well known, accomplished guy as part of our family and we appreciated all the things that you have done for us. He has always been a big part of my life since I was born and never took what I had for granted. One of his greatest qualities among many was his sense of humor. He always made us laugh and never lost that trait. Thanks for all the memories, I am proud to be your grandson. You will always be close to our hearts. It won't be the same without you poppa. Rest in peace. We love you.

Tom was an important figure for me when I was learning to play bluegrass, and he was a huge help to our band Traver Hollow during our formative time in the early '80s. He coached and encouraged us, and even persuaded his brother Bob to bring us down to Florida to the festival hosted by their band Orange Blossom Special. He taught a lot of people about bluegrass, with his own special style. I can still see and hear him playing and singing "Lead Me on the Righteous Pathway."

My condolences to Nan and the family.

My heartfelt wishes to Nan and the rest of Tom's family for peace and consolation. He was a formative and core part of my CT bluegrass experience starting in 79 when I first met him. I learned that if he cussed at me, that was his sign of approval. If he said nothing, then I had more work to do. I'll never forget all he contributed to my musical growth and the vast and endless repertoire of tunes he taught me. Here are two videos I took that include Tom in campsite jams from festivals in 1981 and 1982: http://www.zeleznik-klein.com/mmb/corinth1981/index.html#Corinth1981CampsiteJam.jpg and http://www.zeleznik-klein.com/mmb/tpb1982/index.html#ThomasPt1982CampsiteJam.jpg

Tom was definitely a one of a kind; strong willed, determined and loved a good laugh. He was one of the first bluegrass musicians I came to know back in the mid 70's and I was proud to be his friend. Play pretty up there Thom, you're in good company.

Tom Prue, my Poppa, was a wonderful and generous man who gave so much to those around him. His achievements and societal contributions are numerous and are truly something to be proud of, however, what I will miss most are the quiet moments in which we could just sit back and enjoy life together with friends and family.

For those that who knew him as a great bluegrass musician, and for those who have never had the pleasure of watching him play, I was lucky enough to uncover some videos of him playing at some festivals back in the early '80's. I've uploaded two videos to YouTube, and the links can be found below. Please pass the word to friends and family who would enjoy sharing in these memories.

Tom loved bluegrass music and picking with those who played it well. He enjoyed many songs, i.e. "Rabbit in the Log" with his own version (LOL) The last time we picked he kept insisting we play "Comin' Down From God", now he's with him. Miss you Tom, RIP

Tom was one of the first and probably the most memorable person we met in the bluegrass community. We loved his curmudgeonly personality and spent many hours pickin' with him. For every song we did, he would say, "I love that song, but hate the way YOU do it!" Typical Tom. We will greatly miss him.

September 27, 2012

Rosanne,

Although I've never met your father, I now know where your strength and heart comes from. Of course he will be deeply missed but his love and determination will always be with you, giving you strength.
