Thomas Rayl MD Obituary

Thomas Jeffrey Rayl, M.D.08/08/1983 -01/31/2024

Our beloved son, brother and friend Thomas Jeffrey Rayl (TJ) was born in Hutchinson, Kansas, on August 8th, 1983. He earned his Bachelor's of Science Degree from the University of Colorado and his Doctor of Medicine from Creighton University. Following his residency at the University of Minnesota, TJ worked as an anesthesiologist at both the University and Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. TJ is remembered by his family, friends and colleagues as a caring physician to both his patients and co-workers. TJ was known for his kindness in his relationships with friends and patients. He truly cared for each and every one of his patients and loved his profession. His parents and family will best remember Thomas as one of his anesthesiology friends described him - "I have never known a more kind and gentle soul". TJ's true passion, however, was music. His favorite artists were expansive and eclectic, ranging from David Bowie to Notorious BIG; Taylor Swift to Guns and Roses; Elton John to The Rolling Stones; The B52's and beyond. Over the last few years, TJ's love for music and the arts saw him travel all over the US, Britain, and Europe, to see concerts, museums, and cultural sites. TJ was usually joined by friends on these trips, whose travel, experiences, and lives were enriched by TJ's company. TJ invested himself wholly into his relationships with friends, family and those he loved. He was a collector of experiences, valuing the time he spent with people more than the cost required to do so. TJ's catalog of records, books, and other pop culture memorabilia was a reflection of his fondness for experiences and for those with whom he shared those experiences. He is survived by his parents Jeffrey and Kathleen, his brothers Christopher (Aja) and Phillip (Danielle), along with nephews Bradley, Wesley and Calvin. A funeral mass will be held 10:30 AM Friday, February 23rd at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Castle Rock, Colorado. A celebration of life will be held the following day, Saturday February 24th at the Inverness Hotel in Englewood, Colorado from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. TJ's family requests that those wishing to honor his memory do so by making a donation to the American Heart Association in his name.

May Dr. TJ Rayl's kindness and caring heart be remembered by all those who were lucky enough to have experienced them. He will be remembered for his excellent patient care and as a trusted colleague.

I met TJ in 2012 when I began dating his friend Dan from medical school. On my first date with Dan, It was put to me in no uncertain terms that he and TJ had a very strict concert schedule to keep and that I could "maybe" tag along them if I was cool enough. That first year alone, TJ, Dan and I went to over two dozen shows, dinners and events, which solidified a true friendship between TJ and I that grew over the next decade. He was an excellent broadway play companion, a shoulder to cry on when my father passed away, and the doctor I specifically asked for to perform my epidural when my son was born. I will miss him forever.

TJ was an exceptional person in every respect - a loyal friend, intelligent and thoughtful physician, and man of the arts. He will be missed dearly and remembered always.
And now he´s kicking back with John Lennon, David Bowie, Prince, and so many of his heroes in that great gig in the sky.
