Thomas Roop Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 6, 2025.
Thomas Francis Roop, age 82, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2025, in Oregon City, OR.

Tom was born on April 21, 1943, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War where he spent his days on a ship in a combat zone.

He attended Biola College in California, receiving a degree in theology and a master's in education. Tom then worked as a teacher in District #81 in Spokane, Washington. He returned to serve in the Navy a second time in the 1980s, and then moved to Portland, Oregon, where he spent the second half of his life.

Tom was very musical. He enjoyed playing trombone, and singing - especially in the local church choir. The music he enjoyed listening to most was big band jazz from 1930s/40s. His favorites were Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and Benny Goodman.

Tom loved history, in particular learning about the WWII era. His favorite programs were documentaries and his favorite books were biographies. Tom had a deep knowledge of the Bible, and a strong faith in Jesus Christ.

Preceded in death by his father Thomas William Roop, and his mother Mabel Letitia (Mitchell) Roop. Tom is survived by his two daughters Bonnie Gellatly and Patricia Hansen, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, his twin brother Bill Roop, sisters Margie Michener and Betty Johnson, nephews and nieces.

Tom was loved, and will be missed.
