Thomas Sassi Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 16, 2025.
Thomas Francis Sassi, 82, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2025, in Huntington, New York. With him, were his daughters, Shannon and Meghan, his wife, Lowell, his sister Donna Eschenauer and his loyal dog, Cory. A devoted family man, accomplished investment professional, and Army veteran, Tom lived a life marked by dedication, intellect, and generosity.

Born on November 7, 1942, in Queens, New York, Tom was the son of June and Francis Sassi. He pursued higher education at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, earning a bachelor's degree in management and economics in 1967 followed by a master's degree in business administration in 1969. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a distinguished career in finance.

Tom began his professional journey as a securities analyst at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York City in 1971. Demonstrating exceptional insight and leadership, he rose to become chief investment officer for equities by 1980. His career continued to flourish with key roles including vice president and portfolio manager at State Street Research and Management in Boston from 1985 to 1990; president of the mutual fund group at Dreman Value Management in New Jersey from 1990 to 1993; and senior vice president at Dillan Read Asset Management beginning in 1994.

He also served as a consultant at Omega Advisors Inc. in New York City and co-managed the Scudder Contrarian Fund-where he specialized in identifying undervalued stocks that were "down but not out." Tom concluded his remarkable career as managing director of Deutsche Asset Management before retiring in 2007. Widely respected for his keen market instincts and strategic acumen, Tom was recognized as one of the top five portfolio managers of his time.

Before embarking on his financial career, Tom served his country with honor as an Army lieutenant from July 9, 1969 to June 10, 1971. He was stationed at Watervliet Arsenal in Watervliet, New York.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Tom was known for his vibrant personality and wide-ranging interests. He had a deep love for show tunes and ABBA's music filled many joyful moments. A true car enthusiast, he delighted in taking drives to the beach or simply enjoying time behind the wheel of his favorite vehicles. He cherished outings on Long Island Sound aboard his boat with family and friends and found peace on the golf course or while watching classic films.

Saturday's often found him enjoying hamburgers at Tim and Dani's house-a simple tradition that brought him great happiness. He also had a special bond with animals, especially with his giant cat, Mickey, and took great care of them throughout his life.

Tom's intelligence was legendary among those who knew him-he was affectionately described as a real-life Encyclopedia Britannica. Trustworthy and full of knowledge, he worked tirelessly throughout his life to support those around him.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Lowell Sassi; daughters Shannon Sassi (Sean Andrews), Meghan Sassi; his granddaughter Tess Andrews; sister Donna Eschenauer; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents June and Francis Sassi; brother James Lambert; and sister Jeananne Dawson.

Tom always joked, "no kids, no pets, no marriage," but he did all three with grace, dedication and the purest love. "Here's looking at you, kid."

May Thomas Francis Sassi's memory bring comfort to all who knew him and may his legacy endure through the lives he touched so deeply. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on August 18, 2025, from 09:45 AM to 10:45 AM at Church of Saint Patrick 400 W. Main Street, Huntington, NY 11743.
