Tom hired me as a terribly "green" reporter for Congressional Quarterly at the start of 1960 --then counseled, advised, encouraged me, and launched me on a rich career in national journalism (including the founding of National Journal magazine and my later column for the Washington Post Writers Group and other ventures. I loved and admired him, and still miss him --NealPeirce

What memories! We will miss him always and the elegant and caring gentleman he was. His legacy is the wonderful family he influenced so remarkably.

Tom will be missed by the many who have known him in his various life stages and have benefited from his wisdom and good humor. He leaves us with the wonderful and joyous legacy of simply having known him.

Tom was a gentle, kind and intelligent man - someone who I could always count on for support, advice, and wit. Very sad to hear he is gone but grateful for what sounds like a peaceful passing. All my best to you, Pat.

Tom was an inspiration to me of how to stay active and involved. I served with him on the Democratic State Committee through the 1990's and shared a room with him at the National Convention in 2000 in Los Angleles. He had covered many National Conventions as a reporter over the years but this was his first time as a delegate and what a joy to have him share his knowledge & insight of politics.

sad news. Tom was someone I sincerely respected and admired, and he kind of epitomized for me what a real gentleman is.

Good bye my dear friend, uncle, Dad...The world won't be the same without you for me...thank you for being a beacon of learning and love. Tell RAS Dolly sends love. Glad you got out so peacefully! Lots of love surrounds those you left behind.
