Thomas Skogsrud Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 3 to Aug. 4, 2011.
THOMAS MISFELDT SKOGSRUD March 23, 1925 to July 31, 2011 Tom Skogsrud was born on his parents' homestead in Dahlton, Saskatchewan in 1925. He grew up to farm that land most of his life, and to have deep roots in the community. As well as farming, Tom taught agriculture through the Extension Department of the University of Saskatchewan, and later through SIAST. He served almost his entire adult life on the boards of Dahlton Lutheran Church and the Archerwill Credit Union, and was involved in the United Grain Growers and other organizations. He was known as a judge of livestock, and travelled to many fairs and shows throughout the province. He had a tremendous memory for faces and places, and he had a fascinating or funny anecdote from everyplace he went. Tom was a principled and thoughtful man. He was serious about his work, and about serving the causes and organizations he believed in. But he also loved to play: he was an avid fan of Scrabble and crossword puzzles; he curled and played hockey into his seventies; he was an inspired inventor of stories and games for small children; he sang well, and knew at least one verse of a thousand novelty songs; and he was just as likely to dance with his wife in the kitchen as in a ballroom. After failing health led to stays in Sunnyside Adventist Care Home and Stensrud Lodge, Tom passed away in Royal University Hospital on Sunday, July 31. He is predeceased by his father and mother, Ole and Etta Skogsrud; and by his sister and brother-in-law, Oletta and Ralph Knudson. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Iris Bauer Skogsrud; daughter Anna-Marie Skogsrud, her husband Michael Diegel, and grandsons Tede and Sam; daughter Lisa Skogsrud; daughter Karolin Skogsrud, her partner Arnie Buchholtz, and granddaughter Emily Annika; as well as special nieces and nephews John Knudson, Lois Knudson Munholland, Lorna Knudson McVicar, James Knudson and their families. Many other relatives, friends and neighbours will also remember him fondly, miss him sadly, and be thankful for having shared in his life. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 5, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 812 Preston Ave., Saskatoon. Burial Service will take place on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in the cemetery of Dahlton Lutheran Church (Highway 349 between Naicam and Archerwill), to be followed at 2:00 p.m. by a gathering for memories, fellowship and refreshments at the hall of Bethany Lutheran Church in Archerwill. I was sorry to hear of Tommy's passing. He has been a member ot the family that I have always heard tales about and who could always come back with tales of others. He was one of Mom's cousins that I can say I knew. I have the picture of him holding Orlo and I when we were younger and lighter (smaller) that has been in a special place in my baby book. It is a picture I will always cherish.
