I had the honor of meeting the General while working for his former cardiologist. It was a special moment for me to meet a true pioneer of space flight. Rest well sir. It was an honor.

I first met Tom as a teenager growing up in Downey, California, right across the street from North American Rockwell, where they made the Apollo 10 spacecraft that he commanded. He was my friend and mentor for years and when I tried out for the Astronaut program, Tom wrote a letter of recognition to the head of NASCAN that was the push that got me excepted. He remained a friend long after he retired and I'll miss him terribly. Rest in peace Tom....
your friend always, Don M.

Tom was like a second father to me - it was he who encouraged me to go back to college after I had given up on my first try - he also thought that I would learn more at a smaller school than a larger one and I think he was correct. His demonstration of hard work and discipline has stuck with me throughout a successful carrier that I attribute to his early encouragement. Tom was someone who was humble, had his feet to the ground and always there for his family. All these years I have never forgot his part in my life.

So sorry to learn of the passing of my friend Tom. We did many things together surrounding flying , hunting, and scuba diving. He was a legend in so many ways. All had high respect for him his actions and his conversations.
He shall be greatly missed as a fine human, as well as a leader in so many ways. God speed my friend

Hi all, I just heard the sad news and wanted to share a story.
When I was a kid, I was obsessed with outer space and NASA and wanted to be an astronaut. I was excited to learn that there was an astronaut from another small town in Oklahoma, Tom Stafford. He didn't walk on the moon, but he went down to within 10 miles of it. That's close enough! Anyway, he was visiting schools in Oklahoma to get kids interested in the space program. He appeared twice in one day and mom took me to both of his appearances and I got to speak to him. I remember he was kind. He told me that astronauts do not drink TANG among other things. It was a positive highlight of my otherwise terrible childhood. He gave a little battered boy hope when he had none. I cherish the memory.

General Stafford was a real fighter for the US space program. Were it not for him, we wouldn´t have the Orion spacecraft, SLS, the Artemis 1 test flight, and would not even be thinking of sending astronauts to the Moon anytime soon. His tenacity and drive were truly something to behold. America needs more General Staffords, not fewer. I will miss his gruff voice offering advice and perspective.

One of the pioneers, intrepid heroes, and key players, in the early US space program.
Rest in peace, Sir, and thank you for your service.
