Thomas Swift Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 13 to Sep. 14, 2006.
OBITUARY THOMAS E.S. SWIFT 1939-2006 Suddenly on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at the Montreal Neurological Institute. Dearly beloved husband of Mary Margaret Hume for forty-one years. Proud, loving and supportive father of Todd (Sara) and Jordan (Jacinthe). Tom was predeceased by his devoted parents Stanley and Mary Swift, and his cherished sister Beverley (Peter). He will be sadly missed by his brothers, Jack and Graham (Susan), his dear cousin Brenda (Harry); by his mother-in-law Melita Hume (Ian Hume, deceased); sisters-and-brothers-in-law Laurel (Fred, deceased), Vicki (Andy), Heather (John), Edward and Pat; as well as his many nephews and nieces, their spouses and children Dustin (Anita), Nat (Trina), Tracy (Marc), Jennifer (Deano), Carl (Mary-Ann), Alex (John), Leigh (Michael), Andrew, Ryan and Laura, Jeffrey, Lindsay and Calvin; the little ones Brena, Stuart, Julia, Logan, Jaime, Jacob and Ella, as well as many cousins, relatives and friends. When younger, Tom was a professional recording artist (London and Allied labels), writing-performing such songs as "Blue and Lonely" and "There I Go Dreaming Again"; he had a beautiful singing voice. Tom was Director of Admissions at Sir George Williams University and then Concordia University for thirty-two years. He showed exceptional empathy for the student applicants. After retiring, Tom became the international student recruiter for The John Molson School of Business (C.U.) for eight years. Tom was an exceptionally kind, hard-working man with a brilliant sense of humour that often hid his shy poetic personality. We will forever have wonderful memories of his sweet smile, thoughtfulness, compassion for the underdog (human and animal) and complete devotion to his family and pets (the last of whom, Rosie and Kaila, are missing him daily). Grateful appreciation to Brenda, Harry and Laurel for their care and devotion during Tom's unfortunate extended hospital stay. Thanks to others who visited as these visits meant so much to him. A special thank you to Dr. R. Del Maestro for his masterful surgery on two occasions. In lieu of flowers, if you so wish, donations to the SPCA (Monteregie) would be much appreciated. Memorial Service - Friday September 15, 2006, 2 p.m., St-Lambert United Church, 85 Desaulniers Blvd. (corner Mercille). Reception to follow.

Margaret and family-our deepest sympathy goes out to you. My mother will always remember your kindness and caring when you were her neighbours. Your presence at her 90th birthday last year meant so much to her. You are in our thoughts.

Margaret & Family,

My deepest condolence to you and your family. I have been with Tom on several recruitment trips for Concordia and he was always cheerful, understanding, kind, pleasant, self-effacing and wonderful to have around - although he did not like to be on airplanes. A real gentleman who cared deeply for his family, and always considerate and cordial to people around him. He will be greatly missed.

To the Swift Family.

Please accept my deepest sympathies on the loss of Tom. I had the pleasure of working with him at Concordia for just a short while, but he always had a soft voice and a wonderful smile. He will be sorely missed. I never knew he was a singer. I would love to have heard him sing. My prayers go out to all.

To my cousin Tommy

To a man, I will always remember and look up to. You helped me to get to where I am today. Taking time out of your busy life to make sure I was ok. Knowing I was alone in this world, as I lost my mother at an early age you showed me the way to make the right choices. I will miss you. To his family - you were very lucky to have him for the time you did. Thank you for sharing him with me.

To Jackie and Graham - he will be missed and in my prayers forever.

To my cousin Tommy; I am very sad that you passed. You made me a competitor when I first arrived from England at Coolbrook at age 12. I have always thought of you with affection and have never forgotten our back yard competitions, although you won all of them. (I was 12, you 17). I don't think that I have ever met anyone with your qualities and "no fear" attitude. See you on the field beyond. Love to you Margaret and the boys, Your cousin Tommy.
