THOMAS S., JR., M.D.
71, of Tinton Falls, NJ, died Sunday morning, May 19, 2002, at home. Dr. Vates was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and was a 1955 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine. He garnered numerous awards during his medical training including admission to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He practiced neurology for 35 years as a founding member of Neurology Associates, P.A., in Wilmington, DE and served as chairman of the Delaware Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's Medical Advisory Committee. In 1983, he was awarded the Bronze Hope Chest at the chapter's annual meeting. The Hope Chest is the National M.S. Society's top award to a person who has provided outstanding volunteer services and leadership to the Society. Dr. Vates was a life member of both the Medical Society of Delaware and the Delaware Academy of Medicine, and worked extensively to build the collections of the Flinn Library at the Academy. In addition to his local work, he also served as associate clinical professor of Neurology at Jefferson University Medical College in Philadelphia, sat as an examiner for the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry, and was a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, the highest academic society for neurology in the United States. He has been a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1981 as well as a member of the men of Westminster. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Ann Vates, in 1981. He is survived by his two sons, Thomas S. Vates III, M.D. of Middletown, NJ, George Edward Vates, M.D., PhD. of San Francisco, CA and three granddaughters, Sarah Elizabeth Vates, Katherine Marie Vates and Hannah Rose Vates. Visitation will be from 7-9 in the evening of Thursday, May 23, at CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 2506 Concord Pike in Wilmington. A funeral service will be held at 10 in the morning of Friday, May 24, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1500 Rodney Street in Wilmington. Final interment will be at Mount Royal Cemetery in Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday, May 25. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Thomas S. and Mary Ann Vates Memorial Fund at the Flinn Library of the Delaware Academy of Medicine, 1925 Lovering Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19806. We were so sorry to hear of your loss. I always knew of him as my cousin Tim when we were growing up.
