“Your lack of pants disturbs me” – Darth Tianyu
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, well it might be in your back yard if you live in Pittsburgh. I was a very young new fighter was desperately trying to get in contact with a fledgling realm called Angaron after my move to PA. There were very few fighters back then. It must have been the summer of the second year Angaron was around. There were few stories of battle and Scion now Seiichiro, Luna, and Tianyu were the ones that would always be there with me. Our armerment was weak at best. But Tianyu brought with him 2 blue green short swords, a shirt of chain and a kilt. I don’t know where he aquired the kilt or the chain but I did no he got the swords from his old realm in Kansas, KCD.
Those summer months were filled fighting on Flagstaff hill Sunday afternoons amidst crowds of people who where there to sun bathe or watch late afternoon movies. There were many people who came and go, and many of those people who now are considered the core of Angaron, or the old farts, made their first appearances that summer. But it did not matter who showed up Tianyu, Scion, and myself were always there.
I spent many hours fighting Tianyu and his blue green swords against my broad sword or pair of short swords that summer. The broad sword I owned was a piece of work that I had built off of a weapon of my old days before foam. It was a rare weapon, with a leather handle. Tianyu gave it a name out of desperation, “Gimpy” he called it. Because of the reach I had on his short swords I could and would often gimp his leg and make him fight a long drawn out battle on one knee. Now I would say we were always about even when it came to victories in those battles. But I never really knew how much he hated that swords reach until one day at the base of flagstaff. We had managed to get a couple hey bales and create a make shirft bridge (where you stand on them) of hay bails. In a battle I charged and swung Gimpy as hard a I could. Snap the PVC broke above the handle. Tianyu who wasn’t even in the battle was rejoicing on the side lines. I was crushed, it was my most precious weapon. But to Tianyu it was the defeat of his most hated enimy. Gimpy was dead! I have replaced that core 3 times since, but it never has been the same as that original build of Gimpy.
Time has gone since those days, and it seems the stories of fighting up and down Flagstaff are long gone to the current in crowd in Angaron. I am sorry to trouble you with such stories. So I will tell one of a more familiar sounding epic.
RagNaRok 14 hosted by Avalon, The realm of Numenor held a coin game. One of the aspects of the game was if you challenged and defeated a Numenorian Knight they would give you a coin you could get a dollar for. Well Tianyu thought this was grand. Angaron camped at the base of the hill and on top of the hill that year, and Numenor camped where the secret lake is now. Tianyu made sure he was always in the upper or lower camp and kept a hawk eye out for Numenor’s Knights, every time a knight would come through alone Tianyu was there to challenge one. He made a killing defeating the knights some who were foolish enough to come through the pass unguarded and unarmed. He laughed in their disgrace and I am sure some gave him a run for the money he was trying to win. I’ll never forget seeing him dodge and parry against the Numenorian Knights all week long. I think it was then that he really showed his best. I never saw him fight as hard or as determined as he did then.
Tianyu was a happy man anytime I saw him. If I ever say him upset he sure as never showed it to me. We spent many a late afternoon and dusk talking and I think that on a certain level we were always jealous of each other. It saddens my heart greatly to hear that his time with us is over. I wish he could still be with us today to fight with and have a good time. He has brought so many people to the sport and helped keep so many with it as well. He will surely be missed by all who had the pleasure to call him friend and competitor.

This came out last night :
-----
Tonight I'm making "Tian-Lu Stew" and watching "Highlander". It's this visually repulsive, pungent, acrid, homogenous, reddish mass that's just delicious. Or at least Tianyu and I thought it was.
I don't remember all the details about how it came about. All I remember was cooking something (fried rice I think) when some people were over at the apartment. I was making some fried rice. Tianyu walks in and tells me the place smells like Filipino food. He went on to tell me about a Filipino nanny/sitter he had when he was younger and how this was "that smell". We kept talking about the goofy stuff that Filipinos eat and started looking through the cupboards.
We found a can of corned beef, some vienna sausages, ramen stock and an egg from the fridge. And that's a solid brick of corned beef. Not that corned beef hash stuff mixed with tiny cubes of potato. It's scarier than Spam. From the spice rack we grabbed garlic, cumin, chili, and curry powders. I also think katsup and srirachi (sp?) was involved. It all went in the pot and mashed into this singular mass of stuff. The place reeked of this wonderfully fierce smell that just covered everything. We loved it. I think it frightened others, but we loved it. I think I even had a cold that night. That stuff kicked that cold out of me. It was dubbed "Tian-Lu Stew".
I'm having Tian-Lu stew tonight because my friend, Tianyu, has died. I'm wreaking havoc on my digestive system tonight because it's helping me keep it together just a little longer. The house reeks of undescribable spices right now because I can't fall apart just yet at the idea that I won't be able to share a bowl of this reeking red stuff over fried rice while watching "Highlander" with him again.
------
I'll miss you, Tianyu.
