Timothy Ligon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 3, 2023.
Timothy Bruce Ligon of Bellville, Texas was born to Tom and Hattie Ligon in McEwen, Tennessee on May 15, 1963. He passed from this life in Katy, Texas on August 1, 2023 at the age of 60.

After graduating high school, Bruce went on to study Bible at Freed-Hardeman University, where he graduated in 1985. He spent the next 38 years preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Bruce's first work was as an associate preacher in Marshall, Texas. Afterward, he went to Gracemont, Oklahoma; Saint Jo, Texas; Plain Dealing, Louisiana; Jacksonville, Texas; and then finally Bellville, TX where he spent his last 10 years. In addition, Bruce enjoyed taking short-term mission trips abroad. He taught many courses in schools of preaching in Africa and Latin America. Bruce was a constant encourager of elders and Gospel preachers. Many affectionately knew him as, "Barna-Bruce," after the Bible character, "Barnabas."

Bruce enjoyed working with young people, especially children. He was very involved in the Ark-La-Tex Christian Camp each summer while he lived in Louisiana. Additionally, in the mid-2000's, Bruce began working as a substitute teacher in elementary schools in Benton, Louisiana. He quickly proved to be an extremely talented classroom manager and became highly sought-after as a substitute. He continued to teach as a substitute for the rest of his life. He genuinely cared about the children he taught; one of his great joys was to be in a store or other public place and have one of his students or their parents recognize him and say hello.

Bruce's hobby was traveling and photographing Texas county courthouses. There are 254 courthouses in Texas, and at the time of his death he had photographed close to 150 of them. He would often make elaborate plans to visit various regions of the state to "make pictures," as he put it.

Bruce became a grandfather shortly before his death. He was especially proud of his new granddaughter, Charlotte, and showed pictures of her to everyone he met.

He is preceded in death by his father, Tom Ligon, and his sister, Laurie Teague. He is survived by his mother Hattie (Tennessee), his daughter Hannah (Oklahoma), his granddaughter Charlotte (Oklahoma), and three sisters: Tammie Baker (Michigan), Amy Grider (Kentucky), and Amanda Williams (Alaska).

A memorial service will be held at 11am on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at the Katy church of Christ in Katy, Texas.

I had the privilege of growing up in McEwen, TN and graduating high school with Bruce. He was a great friend and a faithful follower of Christ his entire life who will leave an enduring legacy for the Kingdom.

My husband Ken and I have known Bruce since our college days at Freed-Hardeman and singing in Chorus. We have kept in touch with him throughout the years. He loved the Lord and spread his word. He will be missed but I know he was prepared for his home in Heaven. The Cozarts

Bruce was a good man, and he will be missed. We attended college, sang in the chorus, and took road trips together. He was a capable song leader. He was likeable and easy to love. He adored his daughter and super-adored his granddaughter. He left us way too soon. He was a dedicated soldier of the cross. Thankful he was prepared for eternity and spent his life helping others prepare. Looking forward to being with him again.

Bruce was a good "phone friend " to me, after I lost my husband in 2016. I also enjoyed listening to his sermons. Love & prayers to his family & friends.

Bruce had a compassion that was both encouraging and addicting! He shared a special place in the hearts of our family and we are saddened he is gone from this world. But we rejoice in knowing that he is in paradise and we await the opportunity to see him again!

He was a ray of sunshine-always positive, ready with a listening ear. Heaven has gained an angel.
