Timothy John McCarthy

I first met Tim in 1987 as a 17 year old. He went on to treat me for chronic pain until 1992. I was just looking him up today as was going to get in touch. So very sad to discover he is no longer with us. My sympathy to all who loved and respected him.

A wonderful man and caring doctor who was always there when you needed him the most. You could talk to him about anything and he would listen patiently. How honoured I was to attend the funeral service for Tim yesterday, not only to meet his charming wife and daughters, but to listen to the wonderful and warm eulogies and anecdotes delivered by his brother, daughters and staff. They made us laugh and cry on the loss of this very special friend and doctor. Thank you Kathleen for inviting us in to share this special occasion with you.

What can I add that hasn't already been said? As another long term patient, I will miss Tim with all my heart. A brilliant, dedicated doctor who always gave me as little or as much time needed --whether as an inpatient or at Langwith. Always a spring in his step and a witty greeting. Never too busy to say hello. A fond memory is my waking from anesthetic when mountain district was being re-branded and he quoted that hillbilly private would be a good choice for a new name. then realising I had awoken he whispered "you weren't supposed to hear that ". opinionated, quirky and so willing to stay with tried and true pain management whilst welcoming other new age techniques to be used by other peers--only wanting the best outcome for his patients, keeping all competition out of the equation. My sincerest condolences to Tim's family and co workers-- Tim, you will be dearly missed by all. No one will compare to you.

Deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Tim McCarthy. He was a dedicated and caring professional and I am so grateful to have been his patient. My quality of life would not have been the same without him. My heart goes out to his family, friends, and staff.

Dr Tim, A caring doctor who understood exactly how his help was going to provide relief, who listened and asked questions and was always thinking of you when he was with you, words cannot describe how much he meant to so many patients myself included.. I am another grateful patient who was devastated to hear the sad news. Tim was not only a great specialist in his field of relieving almost unbearable pain for many of us, but a friend who always had time to listen and help. I am saddened & stunned to hear of Tim's passing. As an expatient but still a great friend I've known Tim for 12 years & like everyone, his family, patients & staff at MEPH I can't believe that I won't hear his voice again. I was shocked today to learn of the passing of Dr Tim McCarthy. I started seeing Tim earlier this year having been in chronic pain for the most part of 2 years and after many doctors, injections, procedures and terrible thoughts of never again being out of pain for the rest of my life, Tim was able to help me get relief when nothing else really worked. I will miss his quirkiness and 'out of the box' thinking. My deepest condolences go to his family, his friends and his dedicated staff. I know he will be greatly missed by many.

Dr McCarthy helped my husband when so many others had given up on him. Tim was a wonderful doctor and human being. He is such a great loss to so many people words cannot express our sadness. Our sincere sympathy goes to his wife and family.

I was deeply saddened to hear the passing of Tim. The world is a lesser place without him. I had been one of Tim's patients for nearly 21 years. Tim told me not to let my pain define me, I don't now! Tim always had time to help me. He has definitely changed my life for the better!!

what an amazing man he was helping me through thick and thin when no one else tried miss him greatly

Tim is an amazing doctor and friend. He helped me though the toughest time in my life and l will be lost without him. He was such a dedicated doctor that would not stop until he had lessened the pain and told me one day that he will fix me and will not stop trying until he has. He cares so much for his patients as he work ethic was exemplary like none l have every seen. He will be deeply missed in my heart, taken so young. I hope the next life will be as wonderful as you have made mine by knowing you.

Our world is lessened by the passing of Tim. He was a quirky, colourful, infuriating and dedicated man who had the integrity to stand by his principles even against formidable odds. He fought for his patients and dearly loved his precious family. A work ethic that was amazing, a dedication that never wavered. My thoughts and prayers are with his much loved family, friends, colleagues and patients. Though it was far too short a time, we have been blessed to have Tim in our lives.

So sad to hear that Dr Tim has gone. I found Tim, like so many of us, at point where there appeared to be nowhere to go. He turned my life around with his help, his open mind and willingness to listen. Thanks Dr Tim. You truly were one of the best. Rest in Peace.

I would like to express my sincere condolences to Dr Tim McCarthy's family and friends. Tim was a wonderful doctor who saved me when I most needed help. Tim inspired me to take control of my illness by becoming my own advocate, encouraged me to look at all options and research treatments. Tim treated me with the upmost respect, diligence and took the time to listen and care about how I was going to make a complex situation bearable. I only knew Tim for a short time but he changed my life and I will never forget him. Tim had so much to give and was taken too soon.

The passing of Dr Tim McCarthy is a massive loss to his family, staff & patients. I've never met a doctor with so much compassion for his patients, passion for his work, and the ability to be innovative and help others fight for their rights. He truly worked from the perspective of helping patients to heal and had an integrity most doctors lack.

One of the last conversations I had with Tim was in hospital on a Sunday morning. The nurses had to call him at 5 that morning after I took a turn. I apologised for having to disturb him so early, especially as it was a Sunday. He waved this apology aside with the usual confusion he showed in such situations. Being there for his patients whatever the need and whenever the hour was an integral part of Tim's personality. He never even thought about enjoying a sleep in or time off if he was needed because he was so incredibly selfless.

Tim's dedication to his principals and his life's calling as a physician came only second to his love for his family. He was such a proud father and grandfather. I'd like to send my thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies to Kathleen, his wife and to his daughters, son in law and two grandsons. I can't begin to imagine how difficult this is for all of you. Know that the hearts of all of Tim's patients and our families are with you at this time.

I am so incredibly saddened to hear this. Tim was a tireless and dedicated doctor, one of the hardest working and devoted that I know who always, without fail worried about his patients more than himself.
