Todd Hendricks Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 18, 2025.
Dr. Michael "Todd" Hendricks passed away peacefully with family by his side on Sunday, September 14, 2025.

Todd was raised in Kentucky and attended Trinity International University in the Chicago area, earning a bachelors degree in history. He taught high school history and English at Trinity Christian Academy in Lexington, KY.

He then went on to complete a masters degree in history and coursework for a doctoral degree in English with an emphasis in film studies. During his coursework and after his marriage to Sheila Boggs, he taught film, composition, and literature at the University of Kentucky, Kennesaw State University, and Georgia Piedmont college. He finished his doctoral dissertation while working, and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a PhD in 2014.

He worked for the "Jason Carter for governor of Georgia" campaign and later became Canvassing Director for the Georgia Democratic party.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael Eugene and Beverly Bell Hendricks. He is survived by his wife Sheila Boggs Hendricks, sister Sarah Newton, brother Nate Hendricks, niece Destiny Newton, and nephew Daniel Newton, as well as extended family and in-laws.

Todd shared a love for Kentucky Wildcats basketball with his dad. One of Todd's best memories was attending a UK game with his dad as a child.

He, Nate and their Dad would often call each other during the games with excited discussion.

Todd shared a love of and a talent for teaching with his mother. Like her, he was creative in designing his own curriculum and methods of teaching.

Todd was very close to his sister Sarah, and they lived together at various times while he was completing his academic work. He was heavily involved with Destiny and Daniel's lives, and the family took numerous trips together.

Todd enjoyed being a big brother to his 10-year-younger brother Nate. He would put extra expression into the stories that he would read to Nate, and would teach Nate many skills, such as how to play chess.

Todd and his wife Sheila initially connected through their Christian faith and grew that faith through living out the spiritual covenant of marriage. In he and Sheila's 17 years together, they were able to have many shared experiences in the arts and to travel, most memorably to London and Paris.

Todd is remembered fondly and with admiration by colleagues and friends that he met through academia, as well as by students he encouraged and influenced. He was interested in educating people to see through the eyes of others largely through the use of film as a teaching medium.

Todd struggled with many health issues but persisted through them. In gratitude for and in support of the medical advances that extended Todd's life, Todd and Sheila elected in 2018, before the first kidney transplant, to donate their bodies to science. Todd's cremated remains will be buried in Rose Haven Cemetery in Douglasville, Georgia at a later date.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 5th at 3:00 PM at Columbia Presbyterian Church, 711 S. Columbia Drive, Decatur, GA 30030, with Rev. Tom Haygood presiding.

Visitation will be held directly before the service from 1:45 to 2:45 PM at the church.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Georgia Transplant Foundation, or to Columbia Presbyterian Church.

I taught Todd at UK a graduate course in film and history. What a delightful, truly humane man! Curious, thoughtful, and funny. I will remember him with great fondness. The world's a poorer place without him.

College Professors do not always see the impact of their influence on the lives of their students. In Todd's case, I have been encouraged by his choice to teach history, literature, and film. His determination to achieve the doctorate is inspiring, especially with all the road blocks that would derail the normal person. The world is less with his passing. But enriched by his life...well done, servant of Christ! Blessings on all who have been impacted by his teaching!
