The Smothers were one of the best team of comedy. They were funny, smart and just plain entertainment. There were and are few comedy acts that equal their talent. They always were great together. Deeply missed.

My first memory of Tom is listening to "The Smothers Brothers at the Purple Onion" LP with my older brother. Also, as a 7-year-old was watching The Smothers Brothers sitcom on Primetime. I'm a fan ever since. Thanks, Tommy, for the love with Dickie and the laughs and the love you had for your fans. You are missed much. Rest in peace.

The first record album I ever bought was by The Smothers Brothers and I was an ardent fan. i never missed The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. I was once sent to the assistant principal´s office for defending this program against my English teacher´s mendacious diatribe against their show during a high school class and I hand wrote a plea to re-instate the program when it was wrongly cancelled. Tom served as my free speech model well into my adulthood when I became a social justice/animal activist. I will never forget how much he contributed to my life in so many ways, although I never met Tom in person. Thank you Tommy Smothers for a life well lived. You made me laugh until I cried.

Loved Tommy's snarky and comedic nature. He and Dickie always made me smile. We grew up with them and other great performers back in the 60's and 70's. Miss those days !! RIP Tommy and my sincerest prayers to his family and friends.

My Mom bought my brother and I a Smothers Brothers album. We were hooked! Tom Smothers shaped me into the smart alec that I am. I saw Tom do a yo yo demonstration on the Johnny Carson show and couldn´t believe how skilled he was! I still have a yo yo that I play with because of him.

I met Tommy at my sister´s wedding in 1990. Dick was best man for his friend, Joe Alves. During Dick´s speech, Tommy pulled out his yo-yo and Dick said, "Not here!" Tommy pulled a face and cracked every one up. He never had to force a laugh for his humour. Some comedians say funny things. Tommy was a genius who could say things funny.

I first saw the Smothers Brothers on their own variety show during it's two-year stint on CBS. I was pre-adolescent yet understood their humor on more than one level. No doubt this was due to my family context with parents and an older brother did not shy from political discussions and sharp criticism. Their TV program's end left me disappointed and wondering ever after "Why?" I found solace in frequently playing their LP on my childhood record player. The record album was Aesops Fables according to the Smothers Brothers and my younger sister and I never tired of it! Thank you Tom for you and your brother being part of the American folk culture that shaped me and expanded my mind. I know what a deep loss your family is feeling now. I extend my love and gratefulness to them as well.

To Dick and family : Never met Tom, but as a working musician who's done alot of comedy on stage as part of the music I always realized I'd been heavily influenced by the incredible comedic timing of Tom. He was a cultural icon as indeed you both were and are. Recorded performances of you two will live on forever. RIP Tom, Thanks for the laughs...Rick Rykart Tennessee

Growing up I remember watching the Smothers Brothers show each week. I loved it. So funny how Tom and Dick played off each other and their musical talent. I was so sad when the show was taken off air. I have met Dick and his wife Marie , as they live in my hometown in NY. I extend my deepest sympathy to Tom´s whole family and especially to Dick. As his brother and his partner in show business the magnitude of this loss is so great. May God bless all of you with peace and comfort.

One of my favorite and to this day, most embarrassing stories I get to tell. The year was 1994. I had just given birth to my first child, and I was meeting my mother for lunch at the Colony on LBK. My mother worked there as a hostess, but had the day off, so she knew most of the regulars. When I entered the lobby, Mr. Smothers was there. My mother introduced us, and we were all gabbing about my new daughter. He gave some compliments and asked to hold her. I was flattered that a Smothers Brother just asked to hold my child. As I began to hand her over to Mr. Smothers, I was horrified to notice that the entire front of my blouse was soaking wet. I wasn´t quite sure what to do, so I handed my daughter over and ran into the powder room. Please keep in mind my mother was there, so I didn´t just give her to a complete stranger without supervision. I took my blouse off, I rinsed it in the sink, I used the hand dryer, and re-composed myself to enter the lobby again. By this time, my mother was holding my daughter and Mr. Smothers related that he and his wife had a baby about 18 months old. He reassured me, in an attempt to ease my embarrassment, that these things were normal, especially for new moms. It did give me comfort to know that he was both familiar with and understanding about the craziness of a woman´s body. I most appreciated his sincerity and genuine conversation. I realized at that moment that humans are just humans, even if they are iconic comedians. It was a pleasure to have met Mr. Smothers. My condolences to his entire family.

I was somewhat younger beginning working in the early 1970´s as a Singer/Entertainer for Playboy Clubs International when The Smothers Brothers were popular Live and on TV. I´ve never had the pleasure of meeting Tommy, but I have become a good Friend of his brother Dickie. I´ve told him of the many times I glued mySelf to their television show and took notes in order to improve my Act. It has become obvious to me that the Tommy we saw as a rather naive, accidental smarty pants braggart is about as far from the REAL person as one can get! I understand Tommy to have been deliberate in hiding his Sensitivity, uncompromisingly Creative, more Brilliant than anyone would guess and surprisingly Gentle. Thank You, Tommy.

I met Tom and Dick in about 1993. Previously, I had spent years in radio and TV broadcasting. During our conversation, I mentioned my career history and dear Tommy said, "you are so beautiful, you should go back to TV". That is one of the sweetest memories of my life. Miss you Tommy.

Dear Dear Family of Tommy Smothers -- This world has changed forever, now that our precious Tommy is gone. I know that we all have to cross that paradigm, but it just undid me to see the news. Dear Tommy. There was no one like him, and I am sure that my heart is far from the only one touched so deeply by his special brand of comedy. And talent. Music. WONDERFUL. I look forward to our meeting, one day, dear Tommy. Until then!!!

Condolences to the family of Tom Smothers,

Life´s problems are not quite so heavy if we do not have to face them alone. "A friend is loving at all times, and becomes a brother in times of trouble" says one of the proverbs. May the support from many friends and even those on this site provide you some comfort.

December 28, 2023

My first memory of Tom was when listening to the Aseop Fables album as a child. He made me laugh even then with his dry humor. Yo Yo Man was another favorite. We (my husband and I) were blessed to have met once at a show and he was humble saying he was just a folk singer when complimented on his guitar playing. Still posess a collection of all Smothers Brothers Albums.

it was the Smother's Brothers show that I remember him the best. Always love the phase he used on Tom Smothers, "mom like you best" ha ha

also, he was the great Yo-Yo man and no one can take that away..

TV was one to CBS to watch the Smothers Brothers, I was a teen and was able to understand is slickly placed zings at LBJ, Raygun, Nixon and so many others. As luck would have it able to see him at Monterey Pop Festival June 1967, the music blew me away and Toms intros were funny with a sharp edge. Having the Who and Jefferson Airplane on CBS was groundbreaking. Thank you to Tom and also his bother Dick for helping that young hippie know he was not alone and that my views were being shared with millions on prime time television. I didn't know Tom Smothers, but I grew up listening to their albums. He was in a parade in Indianapolis one year, and I shouted out ' there's Tommy Smothers!'. It echoed off the buildings and his head whipped around looking for me. He put his finger on his nose and pointed right at me and then waved. So cool and typical Tommy Smothers! I loved it.

I grew up in the 60's and remember the Smothers brothers show. Even as a kid I knew this was a very clever and funny show. Tommy was the most subtle and yet over the top comedian. When I saw that he died I literally deflated emotionally. He was someone I really will truly miss. My sympathy to Dickie and to Tommy's kids/family

Ralph Brown Jr.

December 27, 2023

The best thing I ever made my Mom & Dad race home from church for as a young kid! For me, the duo didn't need any guests, as the brothers used the wisest tools to cause Americans to do what Jesus said, "Let him who has eyes see & he who has ears hear."
There is a folk group from long ago, named "The Weavers," which could easily be the moniker of the two on stage, and their thought provoking writers. I'm thankful for the stringed abilities Tom & Dick brought to the TV speakers, as well as the fishing line Dick threw in the water & the taste in my mouth after biting down hard on the hook. Without any efforts on my part to put Tommy on a pedestal, it would not be possible for anyone else to deliver lines as Tommy's studdering & clueless stage character did.
Dick, I've missed you both all these years & now miss Tommy even more.

Thank You so much & more. I grew up [almost] in a very easy , simpler time. We had not much to worry about, except not missing The Smother Brothers Show. You helped me get through to adult years with a laugh in my heart & a smile on my face. Remember the part you 2 had in Nancy & Frank Sinatra Jr's Something Stupid video ? I had to buy stock in YouTube to watch it till my laugh went hoarse. And then some. Love Ya Bro.

The brothers were alums of Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach, California. As fellow alums of RUHS my brother & I knew the Smothers Brothers humor early on. A beautiful joy has left this world with the loss of Tommy. It's so hard to find a reason for deep laughter today and his humor will be so greatly missed.

I owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Smothers: I learned to question authority, not to make assumptions, and he started me on the road to critical thinking! Along the way he made me laugh uproariously as well.

I am sending hugs and warm thoughts to his brother, his wife, children, and grandchild.

He will be sorely missed.

I worked at the Oakland coliseum in the private suites. The Rolling Stones we're playing and Tommie was in the suite I tended to. He took me down to the main passageway and said "watch this", he'd say hi to younger people Who had no idea who he was. The older people would flip! He told me his wife was my age and that they owned a winery , and how happy he was with his life, and how much he lived his wife. Such a humble, funny man. It was a pleasure meeting him. He will be missed. Condolences to his wife and family.
