Salut Tom, tu restes ans mon coeur !

Oui,.....

I just saw the news in the Brown Alumni Magazine. I was one of Tom's students in the late 1980s. He supported a group of us conducting and publishing a study on potential bias in the emergency room. What a intelligent, kind, thoughtful mentor and teacher! My sincere condolences.

I just read this sad news in Brown Medicine. I remember Dr. Wachtel as a dedicated and inspiring teacher, deeply ethical, totally committed to the highest standards, and yet down-to-earth--a real role-model. Sincere condolences to all his family, colleagues, friends, students, and patients.

I was so sorry to hear of Dr. Wachtel's passing. I had him as a teacher when I was at Brown medical school in the '90s and thought he was wonderful. I know that so many in the medical community, not to mention his patients, will be affected by this loss.

I only met Dr Wachtel once, I always saw his NP, Joan Mullaney for the 13 or so years she was there at the office. From what I have read in the guest book I now realise how sad it is to not have known him like the rest of the entrants and his family. I think we would have had some very interesting conversations. I am so sorry for the loss of a great person to his family and his extended family of patients, students and friends.

Lynn and family,
I was shocked to hear of Tom's untimely death.
I came to Brown in 1990 and taught in Community Health clerkship that he ran for many years, and was glad to join him again this past year, when he took up the gauntlet again, teaching the epidemiology course for the medical students. He was a great teacher, we shared discussions about our families. I could tell from these discussions that you and the children were so very important to his life.
God bless

To the Wachtel family, I extend my deepest condolences.
It is with the deepest sadmess that I read about the passing of such a wonderfull man. Dr. Wachtel was my doctor and my friend for more than fifteen years. He took great care to take great care of me physically, and he always found the time to talk about any of the cares of the world that were troubling me. His compassion and understanding was profound. I will surely miss him; it is a tremendous loss for family, friends, patients and the community at large.

Dear Lynn and family,
My deepest sympathy for your great loss.
I worked for Tom in the Division of GIM at RIH 30 years ago. He was devoted to his patients and students. He diagnosed my mother immediately after many doctors and emergency rooms failed to do so. Her disease went undiagnosed for so long, the surgeon Tom sent her to said she would have lost her leg within a month without surgery. The medical profession has lost a treasure, his patients have lost their doctor and a friend.
Forgive me for being so lengthy, Tom used to tell me I had to learn to be more concise.
Tom will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Tom was a mentor to me during my residency training. He showed us all that you can practice evidence-based medicine with compassion and humor. He was a renaissance man; my wife often saw him at art auctions. His legacy will live on in those whom he taught and whose lives he touched.

Doc Wachtel was not only my personal physician, he was my psychologist, mentor, and a listening ear in my times of sorrow and problems. An absolutely unique person despite the pain and ailments that frequently plague me, would have me leaving his office with a smile on my face and a true sense of optimism regardless of my situation. He instilled a sense of confidence in my health situation using his wisdom and experience to help me through the hurdles life presents. I don't know at this point, what I will do without him although, I'm sure he would have some witty comment to put me at ease even in this time of sorrow and sympathy. I will miss you Tom, and could only hope there is someone I can find who can do half the job you did keeping me alive, happy, and as healthy as a 57 year old disabled father of 6 and 4 year old could do...Good-bye Doc. May your legacy continue for many generations to come. Robert Crowther, Chepachet, Rhode Island

Dr. Wachtel's family - Your husband and Dad was my mother's doctor, he treated her for Alzheimer's dementia. Dr. Wachtel had such a calming effect on her that after years of blood pressure medications, they were discontinued. We attributed that to her no longer having "white coat syndrome". She laughed every time she visited him.
Thank you for letting us know him and love him as a friend and advocate of the elderly. This gentle doctor was a refreshing oddity in today's world of medicine. We all hold you up at this time.

I had the opportunity to get to know Dr. Wachtel through calling on him as a pharmaceutical rep. Ten or so years ago, my late grandfather suffered a terrible fall in his home. We happened to be visting for the holidays. I remember Dr. Wachtel making a house call to check up on Grandpa and see how he was. It meant so much to us that he took the time to do this, as this turned out to be Grandpa's last Christmas. In the following years Dr. Wachtel has been my grandmother's doctor. She called and/or saw him any time she didn't feel right, or needed medical attention. As my father said to his mother, "We haven't just lost a good doctor, we have lost a great friend." We are saddened by the loss of this wonderful soul and send our prayers to the Wachtel family.

Dear Lynn:
My heart goes out to you and the kids at this difficult time. Tom and I joined the Brown faculty at around the same time and I always enjoyed our discussions on wide ranging topics. He loved teaching our medical students and had a special knack of understanding how to communicate complex ideas in ways that were meaningful to future doctors. I know that he's had a profound effect on the lives and perspectives of young physicians throughout the country. The many teaching awards he received were merited more than most; his popularity as a teacher was richly deserved since he made even the driest topics engaging. He'll be missed by his students, his patients and his colleagues. I for one know that there is a little hole in my world that he used to fill; a wonderful reminder of the importance of irreverence and a sardonic humor that belied how deeply he felt about the things that really matter in life. My deepest sympathies are with you.

I knew Tom first as teacher in 1986 when I was a medical student. He opened my eyes to the joy of general internal medicine while teaching with kindness, humor and compassion. He taught 'sensitivity' with sensitivity to the actual patients that the statistics described.
Later I was fortunate to know him as colleague on faculty at Brown. He was always so very generous with his time, his wisdom, and his keen insight. Finally and all throughout I have known him as friend.
He was a physician's physician and a dedicated advocate for patients and their caregivers.
His loss to medicine, the community, his friends, colleagues and his family is immense.
Those of us fortunate to have worked and to have known him will forever carry a piece of his good humor, wisdom and compassion.
As do so many others I send my deepest sympathy to Tom's family.

It is with great sadness that I send my deepest symphathy to Dr. Wachtel's family during this difficult time. As a former colleague for many years, I will miss Tom a great deal. Perhaps most importantly, he shared his passion for caring for those less fortunate.

Dear Lynn and family,
I worked with Tom only briefly as a nurse practitioner at UMF. He was a wonderful combination of country doctor, geriatrician, teacher, and academic clinician all rolled into one. I will always remember him proudly showing his custom picture frames on the photos in his office - just another example of the total person that he was. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.

What I loved about my brother is how completely original he was. He made beautiful rock gardens, appreciated an unusual piece of wood, gathered interesting rocks, and was on the lookout for remote desert landscapes and canyons. So much of life grabbed his attention. He is deeply missed.

My deepest regrets to the members of Dr. Wachtel's family. Although I only met Dr. Wachtel once , I was impressed with his approach to patient care and his wonderful personality. He did a remarkable job of improving the quality of life for my mother who has dementia within that one visit. His love of life and care for his patients will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have met him.

Tom was an influencial teacher for me and many others, valued for his independent thinking, sense of humor and irony, and dedication to the frail.
