Tommy Owen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 7 to Feb. 11, 2024.
Austin - Tommy Ray Owen, 74, of Austin, Texas, passed away on February 4, 2024. He was born on August 16, 1949 to Clarance Ray Owen and Clara Jean Owen (Davis). Tommy graduated from Goddard High School in Roswell, NM. Afterwards, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army National Guard. He was quite the entrepreneur, finding success in the hotel/motel business, Harley Davidson and John Deere dealerships, and various wise investments.

Tommy is survived by his loving wife, Dona Owen, and their daughters, Jan Owen (Rose Cottington) and Julie Long (Eric Long). He was a proud grandfather to Casen Stanley, Hayden Long, and Addison Long. Tommy is also survived by his sisters, Donna Parker and Susan Lassiter, as well as six nieces and nephews and seven great nieces and nephews.

In his free time, Tommy loved being with his family and staying active. He enjoyed working on remodeling projects, riding his Harley Davidson, and going on 4-wheeler drives through the woods. He was always busy with projects around the house. One of his recent passions was being a part of Honor Flight Austin with Dona.

Tommy lived a life dedicated to helping others, extending a hand of support to those in need without hesitation or expectation of return. His acts of kindness knew no bounds, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of countless individuals.

In every gesture, Tommy exemplified the true essence of compassion and altruism, selflessly giving of himself to uplift others and make the world a better place. His legacy of kindness will continue to inspire and resonate within the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Though he may no longer walk among us, the memory of Tommy's remarkable strength, generosity, and selflessness will forever endure as a beacon of light in our hearts. May his soul find eternal peace, knowing that his legacy of love and compassion lives on in the lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Honor Flight Austin https://honorflightaustin.org/

I had the biggest gift of my life by god putting Tommy in my life. No words or wonderful story can ever come close to describe the relationship I had with Tommy. My heart hurts and I´m devastated. I hurt so much for Dona and the girls. Tommy was a once in a life time friend. If you were lucky to have crossed his path you remembered him. I will forever be grateful for the times I got to share with him. I will love you forever Tommy and hold you close.

I am so sorry to hear of Tommy's passing. I offer my sincere condolences to Dona and family. I got to know Tommy and his brother in law, Mike, through motorcycle riding with the Roswell Alien City Riders. What a classy man--and so humble, kind, intelligent, and talented. Though I only saw him once a year during those Rides, I always looked forward to fellowshipping with him and Mike. I was honored when he bought a classic 40 year old Jeep from me a couple of years ago, too. Family man, Harley rider, Jeep lover--my kind of guy! This world will miss Tommy Owen. God bless his memory and his family at this time. Praying for His peace in your lives.

I was fortunate to have known Tommy. I first met him through his sweet daughter, Julie - and eventually, Jan & Rose, all of whom are a reflection of Tommy's magnanimous personality. I can't count how many times he lent a hand in one way or another, or he and Dona had us out to their Pedernales' or mountain home.......or wherever "the bus" would take us. He was a selfless man of countless generosity and other altruistic gestures to not only me but anyone in need. It is difficult to find the words to express my gratitude for Tommy, but I will always be appreciative of Tommy's all-encompassing generosity, authenticity, and warmth in supporting me like a part of his family. My heart goes out to Dona, I know he will be missed by many.

Tommy and Dona had been a part of our family for many years.
We met the Owen´s through the hotel business in New Orleans then to John Deer, and Harley Davidson in Auston.
My father moved after they sold the hotel in New Orleans.
My father has passed on as well.

Way too many memories to share!

I went to his house to look at a Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic he had for sale. It was tangerine orange and silver. I got to the house and went into his car barn, and looked at all the beautiful toys, and saved the motorcycle for last which I purchased from him. That was such a great day. I still have the motorcycle. When I was there looking at all of the cars I sat in his cherry red 1967 Chevelle SS-396 4-speed with factory a/c. Wow what a car! I think it was Tommy´s favorite car. He knew I loved it too. He decided last year it was time to let it go, and I bought it from him. I love it and it means even more to me now with his passing! I will take great care of it and cherish it deeply! I´m so glad my with Christy and I had lunch with him and Dona recently! He was helping me with some business questions aside from catching up. He was such a helpful caring man! I´m so grateful our paths crossed. Rest in peace my friend.

We are so sorry to hear this news! When the family lived in Horseshoe Ba, they hosted July 4th parties. Tommy loved to give rides in his cigar boat. One time as we were cruising, the engine blew. Tommy said, "That´s going to cost a pretty penny." Prayers for comfort.

So many wonderful memories of Tommy - way too many for here - but we were recently remembering how Tommy would load Ruvercliff neighbors up every year in his luxurious motor home for a tour of Christmas lights in the Hill Country. In typical Tommy fashion, this was an "off the beaten path" excursion which made this special season even more magical. Dona was the gracious "stewardess" and offering hot chocolate and while Tommy patiently navigated the dark country roads with lots if "help" from the back seat drivers who had no clue where we were - or where we were going. We are grateful for all the adventures we shared - Tommy and Dona as well as these memories are precious. We will see you at the service.

Tommy and I spent a good amount of time together during our high school years hunting in the Capitan Mountains in SE New Mexico. One of my best memories was one of our bow hunting trips for deer, when I was in a tree blind and Tommy in a blind on the ground and I watched a bear approach him. He stood up and shot an arrow at the bear to scare it away - not sure whether Tommy or the bear was more scared! Later on in life we shared our passion of motorcycling with the Alien City Riders out of Roswell, NM. If you were around Tommy then you certainly experienced his fun loving personality and his infectious laugh! We all will certainly miss the good times being in his presence ... Rest In Peace my friend!

I would like to express my sympathy to the family for their loss. I was in partnership with Tommy in some real estate development projects. I always looked forward to hearing his insights and opinions on the issues that came up.
His experience and knowledge was impressive.
Beyond that , his kindness and compassion for others is what stood out the most. He will be missed.

Tommy and I were a year apart in age and as cousins we saw each other pretty often. We had similar personalities, which were so silly so we made each other laugh constantly. I´ll never forget that wonderful laugh. I was just shocked to hear this news and sad beyond belief, I always admired how you were so determined to better yourself and you did a fabulous job of it
To Dona, Jan, Julie , Susan and Donna....please know my heart is so heavy for you. I pray God`s peace for you doing this very hard time. My heart is heavy for the entire family, and please know that they many prayers surrounding you all.
Tommy, I´m just so sorry you left way too soon as I will miss you seeing here on this earth, but I look forward to seeing you again someday with all our family in heaven with our Lord.

I´ll always remember Tommy´s easy smile and how much he loved his family. The last time I was with Tommy he drove Dona and 3 of her friends, me included, to meet the Honor Flight as it returned to Austin. Tommy´s enthusiasm and passion for this special group of men was so inspiring and I feel blessed to have shared that experience with him and Dona.
You will be missed dear Tommy.

I couldn't have asked for a better brother-in-law than Tommy. Even though he was continuously working on a project he always stopped to be with family. When he wasn't teasing me he never missed an opportunity to ask if I was doing okay or to help me. I will always picture him with a twinkle in his eyes and that mischievous grin.

With our common last name, I always felt there was a built in connection between us. Tommy's great smile and sense of humor will certainly be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. All of our Alien City Riders enjoyed very much when he and Mike joined us on our many ACR adventures.
Our prayers will continue to be with Dona and all their families and friends!

Tommy and I spent many days working on clearing and improving land and development for house that we were going to build. Also built a rad lift for a boat as well as went on a few trips to the mountains and he drove us all over gods green earth near Durango, for snowboarding. He was a good man and loved his kids and family. Mans man!

I´m thankful for the examples Uncle Tommy set for me about being driven to succeed, the value of persistence and how hard work pays off. He gave our entire family an unbelievable gift of blessing and generosity when he helped us to step into business ownership in 1996. I´ve always appreciated this selfless act and it had served as a reminder all my years in business about what it means to earn something through hard work but also take care of those who helped along the way. The opportunity he afforded our family has truly changed our family´s lives. For me, his impact has never been taken for granted and it will always be appreciated and serve as a reminder about how to care for family. Thank you Uncle Tommy for your big heart and the examples you set for me.

I remember my dad and Tommy riding their motorcycles up the hill climb at Montesa park outside of Albuquerque,NM. Also when all the family got together for deer hunting, one time it was snowing and Tommy didn´t want Dona to get cold so he put so many clothes on her she almost couldn´t walk.
