Toni Harper-Dunlap Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 6, 2023.
Toni Harper, who began her life as a jazz-singing child star, died in Palm Desert, CA on February 10th, 2023. She was 85 years old.

Toni trained in dance under Maceo Anderson. Her singing career began at seven when choreographer Nick Castle overheard her improvising jazz riffs. She performed her first international platinum hit "Candy Store Blues" at 9 years old in 1946 on the Ed Sullivan show. She also appeared on the Frank Sinatra show, and she headlined at Carnegie Hall in 1949 at 11 years old for Sarah Vaughn. Sarah Vaughn was her lifelong friend and mentor.

As an adult, Toni recorded for Verve, RCA and Columbia records and performed with greats Marty Paich, the Oscar Peterson quartet and others. She performed at Birdland with Count Basey and she sang at the famous Apollo theater. Toni toured Japan with Cannonball Adderley's sextet in 1963. She appeared in several films including How to Stuff a Wild Bikini in 1965.

After retiring from performing in 1966, Toni met the love of her life, Ron Dunlap, and she went on to have a high level career in the US Postal Service as assistant director of budgets for all of Los Angeles. She retired at 55 to spend more time with her grandchildren and Ron.

To all who knew her, she was a charismatic, bigger-than-life personality who knew how to find joy and creativity in every day. She is survived by her step-son and daughter-in-law, her beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren, her companion Charlie, and many friends. Toni was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

I met Toni Harper the day I was inducted into the SL Hall of Fame for DJ's. She encouraged me to continue my pursuit towards being the best I can be. She is such a great inspirator and gentle spirited person. I missed her deeply. I also enjoy listening to her recordings, such a wonderful talent that has seen it all, but yet took the time to share with others.....One of Kind.

I remember when she was in the nursing home feeling discouraged from all that had happened to her and I messaged her saying "You can do this!! You´ve had many obstacles in your life and have conquered them. You´re a very strong woman!" She seemed to perk up and answered "Yes, I can!"

I will always remember the love and support she gave to me regarding my singing. She had a gentleness about her but she was a very strong woman. Her love and support will always be in my heart. Miss you, Toni ChelseaMarie

I was named for Miss To i. My mother loved her as a performer. I connected with her on Facebook. She said she was so honored that I was named for her. We "talked" often through Messenger. My heart was broken when I learned she had passed. Rest in peace, Miss Toni.

What an amazing woman! Honored to have met through her love for her dogs. Last time I visited Toni and her pups I was so taken by her singing as she prepared our lunch. I still hear Stormy Weather in my head from that day,

What a woman, what a personality, what a Voice this lady was and I am honoured to have met and been part of her life over the past two years.
We met in Second Life the 16th March 2021 and for some magical reason we became companions with a bond that grew stronger each day. After 3 months we partnered and said our vowels to each other at her alter, then went on to our reception at her Islands of Love Sim where I was welcomed into her huge family there, the occasion so full off happiness and joy.
We voiced every day after we met learning about each other and sharing our lives from opposite sides of the world and our fondness for each other kept growing with laughs and adventures. That contagious laughs of hers so memorable and never to be forgotten.
It shocked and saddened me hearing of her passing and has now left a hole, an emptiness in my life.
I thank you Toni ( Mrs Asizawho ) for being who you were and for letting me be your companion in the last 2 years of your amazingly wonderful life. You enriched my life and I thank your Real Life family for being kind and considerate towards me in this very sad moment.
I miss you my dear friend and buddy and I always will.
I will close with those 3 words you so lovingly said to your closest,
I love you.
p.s. Gio loves you to.

Dear Toni, I fell in love with your sweet singing on a youtube video, found you on Twitter and made friends with you on Facebook. Social media can be a real blessing. Thank you for all the sweet pleasantries we exchanged. It's so nice when your singing sheroes are as wonderful in real life as on recordings. May you rest and sing in everlasting peace. Sending love and comfort to all your beloved.

Toni and I bonded over our love for art we became friends pretty quickly, and then we were besties and calling each other and talking. she would give me advice, and I would take it because she knew what she was talking about. It wasn´t until a few years into our friendship that I found out that she was a singer. Being a music lover, I was shocked that my friend that I had for a few years was the one and only Toni Harper. We bonded over music and her favorite artists. She would tell me stories of when she was little, but that was rarely most of the time we just talked about art and family. she said she didn´t really like to talk about it until later on then she talked about it all the time which was fine by me, her voice, pure elegance. the most important thing about Toni was her soul her character, her charismatic nature she would say there´s my Tara and I would refer to her as my Toni. We love each other it´s crazy how two people from different eras and backgrounds could find true friendship, love and admiration for each other. I will miss her forever.

My condolences to her family

Toni had been a part of my life for over 45 years. We was always real with you. Always have good advice. I loved as my mother, and she always called me daughter and loved me as one. She often told me, we hit it off from the first time we met. And we did! I am the mother of her granddaughter Telisha. I will forever love and miss her

What can be said about people like our Toni? People with a heart of gold, with a memory long, with no meanness in her body, with abundant talent, with selfless humility and immense compassion live on forever in our hearts and minds!

I only knew Toni for a short time, but she proved to be such a positive and indomitable force! She will be truly missed. ( I was one of her Buddhist friends from SGI. )

I visited Toni in 2019 and interviewed her for a film project. We had met in the virtual world of Second Life beforehand, so this next step of the "physical reality" seemed not a big one. I felt I had known her all my life. This is my favorite photo: getting ready to record her voice with a Burt Bacharach playback CD. I will never forget her and I pledge it to you Toni = I will play a bit of piano everyday from now on, and will think of you, your kindness, your energy, your spirit.
