Dear Heather and Family

I never actually met Tony, but I was talking about him today to one of my colleagues who had worked with him.

Tony was the ultimate Public Servant and Australia has a lot to thank him for. He will continue to be an inspiration and role model for public servants for decades to come me being one.

Sincere condolences

Dear Heather and family
We were so sad to hear of Tony's passing. When working for him in the early 70's he provided so much laughter and was an absolute joy to work for. He always made sure his staff knew they were appreciated and had the greatest sense of humour. On occasions when we worked late he would invite husbands in to help with collating, stapling, whatever was necessary while providing beers and pizza for sustenance. And who could forget his Republican rally on the occasion of Princess Anne's wedding when Rod Calvert held a royalists afternoon tea at one end of the CAGA centre and Tony held a republican rally with beer and pies at the other end. There are so many stories about his early years in the SES that still make us laugh so many years later.
He adored his family and will be greatly missed by so many people.
Our love to you all

Dear Heather and family
I'm deeply saddened with everyone's loss that A J Ayers AC is longer around to mentor so many who at times liked or disliked his frank but always caring advice. I was privileged to work for Tony when he arrived in Defence in 1988, taking on his best mate's (Alan Woods) job.
Tony planned his days around people and conversation, always striving to build better relationships and harmony especially within the defence environment. There were more laughs than tears, and his jokes and phrases go down in historyI can recount many stories of his humour and impact.
The past few years have been very tough, but Tony's stoic resilience and commitment, especially to family won throughhe did get to be home in the end!
Tony rewarded many with opportunity and always backed his team, including Collingwood 100 percent.
A wonderful and revered Australian.
With love
