Tonya Zimmerman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 1, 2024.
Our beloved Tonya Michelle Zimmerman, 55, was called to her heavenly home on July 28, 2024.

She was a flutist, arts-and-crafter, compassionate caregiver, dedicated daughter, sister and dear friend. She loved her Siamese cat Simon, whose sweet yet feisty nature matched her own. Her interests included traveling - especially in Brazil, cooking and entertaining.

A graduate of Atlantic High School in Delray Beach, Florida, she was a sales consultant for Levenger in South Florida before relocating to Greenville, South Carolina, where she helped her parents open their Carolina Chocolates shop on Main Street. Later, she was an office manager at Pioneer Chemicals in Greenville, South Carolina, for many years before retiring recently to focus on her health.

She suffered severe pancreatitis in her 20s, making a miraculous recovery but leaving her a diabetic. She bravely endured years of dialysis as she waited for a kidney transplant. During this time she made many friends who shared her disease and nothing made her happier than to surprise them or her caregivers with small gifts and trinkets of her appreciation for their care.

She lived her life with a pure honesty and compassion, finding joy in everyday pleasures. She loved shopping, attending Bon Jovi concerts, uncovering treasures while antiquing, and decorating for the holidays. She enjoyed baking and Italian cooking - often finding ways to make it low-carb - with amaretti being a holiday favorite.

Her faith brought her strength, and she found comfort in Bible study, reading inspirational verses, and sharing hopeful insights with friends.

Survivors include her parents, Mike and Cindy Zimmerman of Taylors, South Carolina, and her brother, Todd Zimmerman and his wife, Michelle, of Baltimore, Maryland, as well as many loving family members, uncles and aunts, friends and fellow dialysis patients.

Memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation (https://www.kidney.org/) in her honor.

Our deepest sympathy to Mike, Cindy and the entire family.

Our hearts are broken for their loss.

Tonya and I often chatted about what was happening in her life and we shared our mutual love of cats and animals. She was always there to offer encouraging words to help get me through a difficult time.

We will hold onto the fun memories we shared such as Halloween in the neighborhood, block parties and front porch conversations. And her delicious chicken soup.

She was devoted to her parents and is a true sweetheart - she will be missed.
Love Billy & Linda

I met her and her family Mike and Cindy Zimmerman at The Clock in Greer. I always waited on them. They are all my second family. I think of Mike and Cindy as mom and dad. Tonya was a sister I never had. She always said positive things to keep me going every day. I thank god for bringing them in my life. She will be missed.

My heartfelt condolences to Tonya's family and friends. A definite angel. She was truly inspirational. I knew Tonya at Levenger so many, many years ago. I will always remember her big smile and caring ways. My deepest sympathy.

I knew from the first time we said hello that she would be my forever friend. I will miss talking and laughing with her. Lady Tonya will forever have a place in my heart.

Tonya was such a beautiful soul. A true sister-in-LOVE! I called her Tee and she called me Shell and we bonded over 80s rock bands, though she liked Loverboy way too much. She was always kind and generous and willing to share shopping tips. She made a friend of every kind of cat and was especially fond of Hello Kitty. She would be the first to say "enjoy every moment." We will try, Tee, but for now our hearts are broken.

Tonya used to bring me chocolate chip cookies that were soooo delicious. She wouldn't share the recipe with me. She would just give me a little smile and then bring more cookies. She was such a kind, generous person. My sympathies to her loved ones.

I´ll miss my sister Tonya in so many ways, big and small: her laughter, her words of encouragement, her honesty and how she shared our family stories. (Like that time we almost burnt the house down making fried doughnuts for Halloween.)

I admired how she was determined to live life on her terms and did everything she could to thrive. How she managed to stay upbeat no matter what.

Lil´ Sis, you were so special to me. I will keep you forever in my heart.
