Tracey Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 13 to Mar. 14, 2024.
Tracey Fodor Smith died Saturday, March 9, 2024 in Durham, North Carolina.

Born August 30, 1950 to the late Daniel and Maxine (Hepler) Fodor in Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg, Pennsylvania, Tracey attended Hempfield Area High School, the University of Pittsburgh, and St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh. Since 1972, she resided in Chapel Hill, Farmville, and Indian Beach, NC.

In 1986, Tracey and Henry Lewis Smith were married. They worked diligently as a team to establish Henry's pharmaceutical manufacturing business. They were blessed to be successful. Their greatest blessing, however, was the birth of their only child in 1994, Hannah Lilly Smith.

Tracey requested no visitation, no service, and a private burial.

Although Tracey wrote her own obituary, her family believes you deserve to know the remarkable woman we loved. A registered nurse, she cared for so many and could befriend anyone. She was the most generous and humble woman, a longtime supporter of so many charitable causes. The list is never-ending, but to list some of her dearest groups: she was a supporter of the food banks of every town she lived in, a board member for the North Carolina Symphony and Saint Mary's School, a loyal donator to the Ronald McDonald House, The Oakwood School, Campbell University (where the nursing school building is named in her honor), UNC Chapel Hill and the Rams Club, ECU School of Music (Four Seasons Chamber Music), and the Autism Society of North Carolina. She was named Farmville's 1993 co-citizen of the year with her husband Henry, also sharing the 2014 Samuel Burrus Award for Community Service given by the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. She was also the 1994 Chairman of Farmville's annual Dogwood Festival, and served as president of the Women's Auxiliary of North Carolina Pharmaceutical Association from 1993-1994.

Outside of her professional and charitable endeavors, Tracey was a lover of books, travel, live music, fashion, religious studies, a supporter of higher education, global healthcare, women's rights, and many sports teams, both professional and collegiate. She battled her illness (Sarcoidosis) with a smile for over two decades, and for that we could not be prouder of her fight. We will miss her terribly, but we are so proud of the generosity she showed and the mark she leaves on so many people's lives.

In true Tracey fashion, the family requests any gifts be made as donations in her honor to the Ronald McDonald House Charities, the Autism Society of North Carolina, or TABLE NC.

I met Tracey when we were both young Registered Nurses, just starting our careers, on 4-East at what was then known as the NC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. As the newest nurses, we had the high honor of working night shifts and week-ends. 4-East was a very difficult unit - 44 adult beds and every person extremely ill. I was always so happy to see her walk through the door at work. Tracey and I worked very hard every night and kept each other smiling. She was my dear friend. When I later attended the UNC School of Pharmacy, I met Henry, who was a faculty member and, with Dr. Olson, taught my Pharmacy Laboratory classes. Everyone loved Henry. After Henry and Tracey married and moved to FarmVille, we lost touch, but I continued to follow their lives and success as well as her illness.
I am deeply saddened. I extend my deepest sympathy.

Henry and Hannah,
Please accept my condolences on your loss. I attended HAHS for Junior year only, but it didn't take even that long for someone new there to know who Tracey Fodor was -- there was room in her heart for every concern and there was honest sincerity in all her undertakings. Although I was shocked to read her name in this post today, I was not surprised at all that she became a nurse and served every community in which she lived in so many ways. What wonderful memories you must have of her!
