Trent Parkinson Obituary

Published by Dallas Morning News on Nov. 20, 2016.
PARKINSON, Trent Trent Parkinson passed away on Saturday, Nov 5, 2016, at his home after a short illness. Trent was born in Denver in 1925 to Trent and Mabel Holcomb Parkinson. He grew up in Tulsa where he graduated from Will Rogers High School in 1944. He served in WW II with the U.S. Army in Europe; he graduated from the University of Tulsa. Trent started his career in the apparel business with J.M. Woods in Waco and then spent the next 25 years as an executive in various divisions of Genesco and Kayser-Roth. He later worked as an investment banker with the Treadstone Group Inc. and Michael T. Nurre & Co. Trent had a great love and interest in music. He especially loved swing and jazz and played the drums professionally with his own group and others in the Dallas area for over 40 years. Until this past August, he volunteered with the Kings of Swing for weekly dancing at the Plano Senior Center. He is survived by his wife, Johanna Grilli Parkinson, 3 children: David Parkinson of Waco, (Beth), Patricia Tynes of Waco and Donald Parkinson of Ft. Davis and 3 grandchildren: David Parkinson, Jr., Laine Parkinson and Clay Tynes. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at the DFW National Cemetery on December 2. A Celebration of His Life will follow at 4-6 at the Country Place Clubhouse. Memorials may be made to Austin Street Shelter, Doctors Without Borders or charity of your choice.

I knew Trent from the Kings of Swing. We worked well together, he on drums and I on bass. He always asked after my health, and I enjoyed knowing him.

It was a distinct honor to know Trent as he was the epitome of class. Although a distinguished, articulate gentlemen of the highest order, he was so low-key that few knew they were dealing with a true WW II combat hero...one sent to northern France only weeks out-of-high school, landing days after D-Day, with Berlin being his next destination! I greatly valued our friendship, will particularly miss our political banterings and, sadly, extend Cathy's & my deepest sympathies to his family.

I first played with Trent in the Five Star Premier Band and the Good Time Gang. He subsequently recruited me to play with The Kings Of Swing. He was my source of inspiration and encouragement and a class act.

I knew Trent as a drummer, and a great one! We had a short run of five or so years together with the Kings of Swing playing at the Plano Senior Center. I had no idea of his age until a couple of years ago and noticed he was a day older than my mother. I certainly had no idea he was in a health situation. Not at all. Very surprised to hear the news. After he retired from the band, we recently talked about getting together to play again.... Miss you Trent.
