TREVOR WEEKES

Trevor Cecil Weekes, aged 74, died at his home in Sahuarita on May 26, 2014 surrounded by his wife, Ann; sister, Laraine; daughters Karina, Fiona, and Lara; sister-in-law Frances, and brother-in-law Paddy after a long battle with cancer. Trevor was born in Dublin, Ireland, to Gerard and Florence Weekes. He married Ann Owens, also from Ireland, in 1964.

Trevor obtained his Ph.D. from University College, Dublin, in Physics in 1964. He came over to the United States in 1966, first living in Boston until he moved to Arizona, where he helped start the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Trevor pioneered the techniques that the very successful Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) telescope system uses to detect TeV gamma rays. He was the winner of numerous awards, including honorary degrees from the National University of Ireland and from the University of Chicago. He won the Rossi Prize of the AAS in 1997 and the Yodh prize of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics in 2007. Trevor took a deep personal interest in the welfare and careers of the many people he drew into very high energy astrophysics. He went out of his way to welcome new scientists into his collaborations and into his home, mentoring 30 students from his alma mater as well as many others from throughout the world. Trevor was recently honored by his colleagues around the world in a celebration humorously titled "Trevorfest" in which his achievements were honored by his many colleagues and former students. Trevor frequently lectured in the Green Valley area. In addition to his scientific achievements, Trevor was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ann Katherine; daughters, Karina, Fiona, and Lara; grandchildren, Catherine, Trevor, Frances, and Lauren; sister, Laraine; sister-in-law, Pat; niece, Tara; and numerous other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and nephews and nieces. The family will miss the twinkle in his eye, his quick wit, and his great love.

A Mass celebrating his life will take place at the Most Holy Trinity Church, 1300 N. Greasewood, Tucson on June 1 at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Casa Maria, 401 E. 26th St., Tucson, AZ 85713 (www.casamariatucson.org).

I learnt to play Monopoly on the Weekes´ front lawn: it was obvious even then - summer `56? - that Trevor was going to be exceptional.

Karina, Fiona, Lara. It is only very recently that I learned that Trevor pased away last year and in the proces learned that your mom passed away as well shortly after. My sincere condolences to all of you and to your families.

My family has lived in Tucson from 1968 to 1978 and we were friends with your parents. We have visited your home in Suharita several times with our daughters, Elizabeth, Ingrid and Valerie who were close in age to the three of you. You also have visited our home in Tucson and I have pictures of several of you getting wet under the hose in our backyard. My oldest, Elizabeth does remember all of you.

When your dad was very sick a few years ago, I was on your mom's email list and was following his recovery progress, unaware of the fact that she herself was fighting her own battle.

Your parents were amazing people and I consider myself lucky to have been in their lives.

Karina, Fiona, Lara and family - please accept my heartfelt sympathies as I have just learned of your kindhearted father's passing just now as your sweet mum has passed as well. My memories of them both are so sweet and filled with joy as that's what I remember most of them. Kind and joy filled people. My brother and I so enjoyed coming to your house to swim when we were all kids - it was a great adventure at hour house out in Sahuarita. Fond fond memories. I'm so greatful to have known them.

Dear Ann, I was shocked to read of the passing of Trevor in today's Irish Times. I had only in the last few years reconnected with Trevor via LinkedIn. I have very fond memories of Trevor particularly from our time as tram conductors in Blackpool during our time in UCD. I am so sorry for your loss.

I met Trevor Weekes on the occaion of a search of cosmic antimatter, ARTEMIS projest, using his Mt Hopkins great mirror. A man of knowledge and modesty, however creating a very wide new window to explore Universe. He really deserves to have his name given to a bright shining celestial object, not just a gravestone.

Dear Ann and family,
I so much enjoyed meeting you both at the MM luncheon at La Fuentes 3 years ago. Trevor's patience and humor trying to talk while listening To those Mariachis is a memory I will never forget. We have missed seeing you both in group and want you to know our prayers and thought have been with you all. Warmly, Lynn Barwick

Mary and I were always hoping we would get to meet Trevor again. Now we can only cherish the memory we have of him as a loveable eighteen-year-old whom everyone looked up to as a model student, and as the organiser of great parties.

Fiona and Lara, I am so sorry for your family's loss. I met your father oh so briefly when I visited the MMT observatory in Amado as a teenager. Brilliant scientist and a great humanitarian. The world is dimmer without him in it. Our condolences and prayers.
