Val Kilmer, the celebrated actor known for iconic films like "The Doors," "Tombstone," and "Top Gun," died April 1, 2025 of pneumonia at the age of 65 in Los Angeles.
Kilmer was known as an often-daring actor whose work swung from mainstream appeal to challenging and unusual. He played popular heroes like Batman ("Batman Forever" in 1995), swashbuckling anti-heroes ("Willow," 1988), gangster thugs ("Heat," 1995), and even Elvis Presley ("True Romance," 1993).
"Val Kilmer had me wanting to fly fighter jets, be Batman, rob banks, and hunt lions as a kid. They don't make too many movie stars like him anymore," writer and director Dylan Park-Pettiford said of him on the social media platform X.
Born in 1959, Kilmer grew up in Chatsworth, in California's San Fernando Valley, pursuing acting at a young age. In fact, he became the youngest person at the time in the Juilliard School's Drama Division. He began his career on stage in the early 1980s, with his big break coming in 1984 with the action comedy "Top Secret!," in which he played a rock star – not the last time he'd take on such a role.
In the years that followed, Kilmer had a string of successes that made him one of the most celebrated and diverse actors of his generation. He played the lead in the quirky comedy "Real Genius," in 1986 became an icon of '80s cool when he performed as Iceman alongside Tom Cruise in the smash hit "Top Gun" (a role he briefly reprised more than 35 years later in "Top Gun: Maverick"), and led the George Lucas-produced fantasy adventure movie "Willow" in 1988.
Kilmer's work could often be daring, such as his brash portrayal of rock star Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone's 1991 biopic, "The Doors," for which Kilmer received widespread praise; his take on Elvis in the Quentin Tarantino-penned Tony Scott movie, "True Romance;" and his celebrated turn as western legend Doc Holliday in 1993's "Tombstone."
His bold approach didn't always land him in critically successful movies. He took on the iconic role of Batman and Bruce Wayne in 1995's "Batman Forever," a film that received mixed reviews at the time, but which is more fondly remembered by some fans today. The following year, he starred alongside Marlon Brando in "The Island of Dr. Moreau," an adaptation of the H.G. Wells book of the same name that proved to be a critical and box office disaster. During the same period, however, Kilmer held his own against acting legends Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in Michael Mann's modern crime classic, "Heat."
Other credits include "The Salton Sea," "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," and the aforementioned "Top Gun: Maverick." Kilmer's work slowed down greatly in 2015, when he was diagnosed with throat cancer, which he did not reveal publicly until 2017.
For his part, Kilmer did not consider financial success when he chose roles, telling the Los Angeles Times in 1993, "I have very definitely had a different kind of career than Tom (Cruise). You never know if a job has commercial success written all over it. I just think life's too short to worry about that."
Kilmer won a Satellite Award in 2005 for his work in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," was nominated for a Grammy in 2012 for Best Spoken Word Album for "The Mark of Zorro," and was nominated for several MTV Movie Awards, among other honors.
Film critic Richard Roeper called Kilmer "a brilliant presence in some of the most enduring films of his generation." X user Shooter MacGavin (named after a character from "Happy Gilmore") said, "For most of us, a little piece of us died with the passing Val Kilmer. An icon that touched our lives in some way through his acting performances. He will be missed greatly," while the Daily Grindhouse called him "one of the most unpredictable and versatile leading men of the past forty years. No two Kilmer performances were alike. He looked like a movie star, but had the heart and soul of the great character actors."

First, sorry for his family and their loss. He was a father. He was the first actor that I liked after I lost my memory. His roles were always so different and I´d remember his talent. So I continued to watch him until he passed away. I did not know him, but I respect his will to keep working and being who he was, a very talented and gifted individual. He will be missed.

Thank you Val Kilmer for all the great movies and memories. You were tops among the list of leading men in my opinion. You were different than most, you had that charisma, that extra twinkle in your eye that set you apart. I pray in the years to come your family and friends can remember only the good times you all made together and not the bad things you went through here on earth. So go on and Fly To The Angels, The Lord Awaits You There.
Love always, Pamela F.

When someone like Val Kilmer has been a part of your world for years-through movies, interviews, memories-they become more than just a distant celebrity. They become part of the fabric of your life. His roles, his voice, his presence-they touched something deep, and that's real.
Grief doesn´t always wait for permission. Sometimes the people who never even knew us still had a huge impact on who we are, and when they´re gone, it hits like losing a friend. Val brought so much to the screen-heart, humor, grit, poetry-Mourning the loss of this light.

Heartbroken doesn´t even begin to cover it. Goodbye to a true icon-Val Kilmer, a man whose presence on screen was as unforgettable as the legacy he leaves behind. From the swaggering brilliance of Doc Holliday in Tombstone to the haunting vulnerability in The Doors and the cool charisma of Top Gun, Val wasn´t just acting-he was living every role with fierce intensity and soul.
He brought poetry to toughness, elegance to edge, and always carried a quiet depth that made us feel like we were seeing a little piece of truth behind those eyes. Even in his later years, faced with unimaginable challenges, he met them with grace, humor, and courage-an artist through and through.
Val, thank you for the memories, the characters, the laughs, and the tears. You were one of a kind, and we´ll miss you deeply. Rest easy, legend.

I feel so blessed to be able to write this for Mercedes, Jack and all Val's friends. Val's life and the talents he shared with us are an inspiration. The dignity with which he endured his physical affliction is exemplary. I want to give special thanks to Val for his outstanding performance in "Thunderheart". His role in that movie has the power to heal our nation and redeem us from injustice. His was a life well-lived and his contribution to this world appreciated beyond what mere words can express.

My family would like to extend our condolences to the family of Mr. Val Kilmer. He was such a smooth, gifted and talented actor who gave the world his best. He was a dedicated actor who put the time, the effort and the energy any role he played to make it unforgettable. "I'm your huckleberry" from "Tombstone" is an example of his giving meaning to three simple words. He was an awesome actor, a husband, a father and no doubt a good friend who will be missed by all who knew him personally and professionally. Val Kilmer's legacy will be part of cinema history for all eternity he will never be forgotten.
Kilmer family, please remember there is never a moment when God doesn't care, never a time when he won't hear your prayers. And never a time that you will be alone. Stand firm and stand strong better days are ahead.
Sincerely,
Diana Koulalis-Karatza

To Mercedes and Jack (and all of Val's family and friends) I send my love and condolences. It's amazing how one person can touch so many people and that's a VALidation of who your Dad was on this Earth. I'm an artist and have lost much in the last couple of years (lost my Mama first, then my husband, and most recently lost virtually everything in an apartment fire). And I lost my inspiration. Hadn't painted in over 2 years, found enough money to buy a cheap set of watercolor paints. After watching Tombstone for the umpteenth time, I painted Doc Holliday. Never painted anything with watercolors before, but I was INSPIRED.
P.S. Val you already know my top 3 favorite films of yours.
You are missed.
