Valerie Jeter-McKenzie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 3, 2024.
Valerie Lee Jeter-McKenzie, loving wife of Brian McKenzie, was the oldest of three siblings. She is survived by her brothers Lawrence Anthony and Michael Patrick, her son Ryan Christopher, and grandsons Amir and Qishon. Valerie was a devoted mother and grandmother and was always willing to help others in any way she could. She valued service to God, loved ones, friends, and others throughout her journey.

Valerie was a busy musician since first grade, when her mother insisted she start piano lessons. By fifth grade, teacher Sr. Miriam Gerard invited her to begin playing for Friday Masses, and she accompanied liturgy ever since.

Valerie was a native Philadelphian and 40-year member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish where she was also the music director. She earned a bachelor's degree in music education from Chestnut Hill College and a master's degree in theological studies with a concentration in liturgy from LaSalle University, both in Philadelphia. Valerie taught elementary music and theology for 30 years in various diocesan schools, most recently teaching at Rosemont College. She served as an adjunct professor teaching liturgy and sacramental theology at LaSalle University, Chestnut Hill College, Rosemont College, and Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ. She served on the board of the National Pastoral Musicians (NPM), was an active member of the National Black Catholic Congress, and a retreat leader.

Valerie was committed to teaching the importance of liturgy to everyone. She felt strongly that liturgy should meet people in their lived condition. She knew it so well and whether she was at St. Vincent's, teaching at school, or at NPM, she instinctively knew what was needed to help people pray.

Valerie's presence will be profoundly felt in all the organizations she served for years to come, and in pastoral ministry altogether. Her love of God, family, and friends will be a source of strength to all who are left to cherish her memory. Please pray with us for the repose of her soul, and for her family at this time.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing Monday, February 26, 2024, 9-11 AM followed by a Mass of Resurrection at 11am, at St Vincent de Paul, 109 E. Price St, Philadelphia. Interment will be held at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Repast will be at the Best Western Plus, 3499 Street Rd, Bensalem.

In lieu of flowers, Donations in Valerie's memory can be made to Saint Vincent de Paul Church, 109 E Price St, Phila, PA 19144 or the Humane Society of the United States.
