Kingsport, TN Mrs. Velma Elizabeth Holcomb White Johnson, 83, a former resident of High Point, NC, died Saturday, November 6, 2010 at Preston Place II in Kingsport. Mrs. Johnson was born August 11, 1927 in Yadkin County, the youngest child of Walter Everette and Bessie Cranfill Holcomb. She graduated from Yadkinville High School and business college and began her working career at Western Electric in Winston-Salem. A resident of High Point since 1954, she was employed as a receptionist by Dr. Craig Parks for 25 years. She was twice married, first to James Murrell White and later to Walter Nelson Johnson, both of whom preceded her in death. Surviving are two daughters and son-in-laws, Vickie and Jim Baird of Kingsport, TN and Jane and Wayne Cole of High Point; a son and daughter in law, Ron and Melanie White of Atlanta, GA; a sister, Ethel Holcomb McElfresh of Winston-Salem; 14 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 13 followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., led by Dr. Roland Cavanaugh in the Davis Funerals and Cremations Chapel. Burial will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Preston Place II Activity Fund, 2303 N. John B. Dennis Highway, Kingsport, TN, 37660 or to Hospice at the Christen Foundation, 200 Professional Park Private Dr., Kingsport, TN, 37663. I am so saddened by Velma's passing. I will keep everyone in my thoughts and prayers. I have so many fond memories of Velma and the entire White family. Velma was such a speacial lady and was such a wonderful friend to my mother and myself. I will truely miss her but know that she is now at peace and with her loved ones in heaven.
