Verita Prothro Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 11, 2024.
Sparks - Verita Black Prothro was born on August 19, 1964 in Reno, NV to Ella B. and Chatman Black. She passed away peacefully on April 3, 2024, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family and close friends.

Her Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Friday, April 19th at 11:00 a.m. at Mountain View Mortuary, 425 Stoker Avenue, Reno, NV 89503.

Verita graduated from Wooster High School in Reno, in 1982. She continued her education at the University of Nevada-Reno, where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and then earned her Master's Degree of Education with an emphasis in literacy from Leslie College.

In August, 2000, Verita was married to Dr. David Prothro. Verita became an instant mother and enjoyed having a family. Verita's heart was overjoyed when Skyler came into their lives. Truly Verita's proudest accomplishment of all was being his mother. The two of them had an incredible and amazing bond and cherished one another. Her face always lit up at just the mere mention of his name.

Verita was very involved in the political and legal communities of Reno and was also a small business owner. With great passion, she opened VERITAS in 2013 with her mother and partner, Ella.

Verita had so many kind and loving friends, a wonderful family, and was deeply loved and respected by all who were blessed to know her. Verita lived a blessed and impactful life. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, David Prothro; son, Skyler Prothro; stepdaughters, Nicole Prothro and Michelle Perez (Joaquin); Grandchildren, Roman, Kamora, and Zen; mother, Ella B. Black; brother, Murlin Hatdley (Cheryl); niece, Lakenya Christian; nephews, Brandon, Marcus and Jason; aunts, Mae Mitchell, Delores McAlister and Cloteane Lloyd; Uncles Joe and Eli Lloyd; and a host of many loving cousins. Verita was preceded in death by her father, Chatman Black and grandchild Neziah.

I just googled Verita's name; I found her obituary dated April 2024.

Additional sadness came upon me when I figured out that
three months later her precious mom (Ella) also died.

May they both rest in peace.

I am so sorry to learn of Verita's death. Her passing leaves a huge void, not only within her beloved family, but in our Reno community. She was a delight to work with at the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. It is a blessing that Verita packed so much living into her too short life.

I met Verita when I answered her call for somebody with sewing skills to customize her living room curtains. I wound up doing several other sewing jobs for her, as well as some reupholstering. I was as excited about beautifying her new home as she was.

I am so very sorry to hear of her passing. She was a truly lovely person, as are her son and mother. To them I offer my most sincere condolences.
