Verl E. Shook, 69, of Montour and formerly of Grinnell, died on Friday, August 19, 2016, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson, chaplain of Grinnell Regional Hospice, officiating. Casket Bearers will be Tim Brown, Anthony Engelbarts, Roger Engelbarts, Mike Headlee, Bob Martin and Montie Rouzer. Interment will be at the Pleasant Township Cemetery in Ewart, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Verl Shook Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Verl was born on November 17, 1946, in Grinnell, Iowa to Willard and Dorothy Foster Shook. He was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1965. Following his education he moved to Alaska and worked in various jobs. In 1970, he returned to Grinnell and became employed at Saunder's D-X service station as a mechanic. He remained with the D-X station for several years before taking a position as a mechanic with the Firestone store in Grinnell. On July 21, 1973, he was married to Barbara Engelbarts at the Presbyterian Church in Ewart and to this union was born one son, Scott. Verl enjoyed camping, auto racing, cooking and watching ice hockey. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Shook of Montour, IA; one son, Scott E. Shook of Malcom, IA; his step-father, Gene Berry of Montezuma, IA; and his siblings, Vern (Grace) Shook of Missouri Valley, IA, Lorna (Jim) Paisley of Sturgis, SD, Joyce (Ed) Brown of Malcom, IA, Brenda (Mark) Martin of Grinnell, IA, Glen Berry of Brooklyn, IA and Pam (Jeff) Paul of Grinnell, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents.

I was a classmate of Verl's and you couldn't find a nicer guy! I left Grinnell many years ago but when I bumped into Verl years later, he never forgot a face and was his same nice self. Verl was one of the good guys and will be missed. May you Rest In Peace Verl...
