Vern C. Sutherland BANDY, Va. Vern C. Sutherland, age 64, of the Dry Fork Community, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 200, at Tazewell Community Hospital, Tazewell, Va. Born March 3, 1945, in Tazewell County, Va., he was a son of the late James Wilson Sutherland and Caroline Boyd Sutherland. He retired as a coal miner from Consolidation Coal Company with over 25 years of service. He was a member of the UMWA Local 2322 at Amonate, District 29. He was of the Christian faith and loved working with wood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Sutherland and Russell Sutherland; one sister, Margaret Sutherland. Survivors include his loving wife of 37 years, Vivian L. Sutherland; two daughters, Tracy Sutherland of Thomasville, N.C., and Penny Shupe and husband Dwight of Chilhowie, Va.; one son, Jamie Sutherland and wife Jonie of Denton, N.C.; five sisters, Stella Neal of North Tazewell, Va., Lois Pagliasotti of Damascus, Va., Eula Rizzo and Donna Bobinski, both of Newark, Ohio; and sister and special caregiver, Beulah Minton of Cedar Bluff, Va.; three brothers, Buster Sutherland of Scottsmoor, Fla., Marvin Sutherland and wife Shirley of Marion, Va., and Garnett Sutherland and wife Tenna of Tazewell, Va.; five grandchildren, Shannon Rose, Brandon Crigger, Haleigh Shupe, Mathew Shupe and Hannah Sutherland; three special sisters-in-law, Nancy Sheppard of Marion, Va., Barbara Neff and husband Marion and Darlene Snyder, all of Stanton, Va.; two good friends, Blaine Myers of Dry Fork, Va., and Jimmy Hampton of Cedar Bluff; special cousin, Leroy Sutherland; special dog, Lady Bug; two daughters from a previous marriage; several nieces and nephews, other family members and friends. Funeral services for Vern C. Sutherland will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va., with Pastors Roger Barnett and David Neitch officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be Jimmie Hampton, Blaine Myers, Joey Snyder, Dwight Shupe, Shannon Rose and Carl Bobinski. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Keiber and Tommy Dout. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 - 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, 2009.
