Verna Mae Johnson, 95, of the Donnellson Health Center, formerly of Farmington, Iowa, passed away at 11:26 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital in Fort Madison, Iowa. Born March 2, 1919 in Farmington, Iowa, the daughter of Volney and Goldie (Rider) Therme. In 1939 she married Joseph E. Johnson in Kahoka, Missouri. He preceded her in death. Survivors include her two daughters Sharon (Howard) Ellis of Farmington, Iowa and Phyllis Carle of Fort Madison, Iowa, six grandchildren Rhonda (Lonnie) Good, Sheila (Kevin) Saunders, Jeff Carle, James (Mendy LeMoyne) Carle, Kevin Holland and Julie (Andy) Gerveler, ten great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild, one sister Juanita Johnson of Burlington, Iowa, one son-in-law Walter Johnson of Fort Madison and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joseph, one daughter Judi, one granddaughter Teresa, two sons-in-law Larry Losey and Joseph Carle and two brothers Manford Therme and David Therme. Verna was a 1937 graduate of Farmington High School. After she graduated, she became a school teacher, then worked at Riders Nursery, Thompson Variety Store, Bonaparte Glove Factory and lastly at Riverside Plastics where she retired. Verna was a member of the Community of Christ Church, and the Jessie Ward Circle of the Church. She volunteered at the Farmington Public Library for many years and received the 1994 Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame Award from Governor Brandstad for her service at the library. Verna enjoyed reading, crocheting and ceramics. Friends may call from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Farmington, Iowa. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Farmington with Evangelist John Robertson officiating. Burial will be at the Greenglade Cemetery in Farmington. A memorial has been established in her memory to the Farmington Library, Community of Christ Church or Cancer Research. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.schmitzlynkfuneralhome.com. The Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Farmington is assisting the family with arrangements.
