Verne Crookshanks

Exeter - Verne Crookshanks passed away peacefully at home in Exeter, California, on February 15, 2025, after a long battle with MDS. He was born in Visalia, California, in 1942 and spent his formative years there. In 1964, he married Mary Jo Montalto, and two years later, he graduated from Fresno State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture.

Verne began his career working for Nash De Camp as a field man before transitioning to their packing house in Exeter. In 1977, he co-founded Venida Packing Inc. with three partners and served as its manager for 33 years. Even after retiring from Venida, he remained dedicated to farming and continued working full-time in the industry.

A respected figure in the agricultural community, Verne was an active member of the California Fresh Fruit Association for 50 years. He served on its board of directors for four decades and held the position of chairman from 1986 to 1987. In recognition of his contributions to the produce industry, he received the association's esteemed Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

Beyond his professional life, Verne found great joy in duck hunting and football, making fall his favorite season. As a member of the Exeter Duck Club in Los Banos, he cherished time spent there with his sons and grandsons. However, his greatest happiness came from having his children and grandchildren gathered at Papa and Nana's house for lively family dinners.

Verne is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Jo; their children, Michael (Shani) Crookshanks, Heather Mashler, Holly Vincent, and Samuel (Christen) Crookshanks; ten beloved grandchildren; his sister, Marilyn Rankin; and his brother, Glenn Crookshanks. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Verna Crookshanks; his brother, Wayne Crookshanks; nephews Chad and Scott Crookshanks; and niece Janet Wilder.

In Verne's memory, donations may be made to Kaweah Health Hospice or a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements will be private.
