Vernon Fabian Dickman

Springdale

Vernon Fabian Dickman, 94, returned to his Heavenly Father peacefully in his home on July 2, 2014. He was born February 4, 1920 in Deer Lodge, Montana to Signe Edling and William Fabian Dickman. On June 10, 1942 Vernon married the "love of his life," DeBeth Steed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend, Vernon was a man of honor and integrity. He had a keen sense of humor and used his wit to make people laugh all of his life...even at the very end. His way of telling stories was unique and funny. He was a strong leader, holding fast to the ideals that he thought were right and true. He was also a good teacher. He was thrifty and industrious. Coming from a humble beginning, he learned the basic principles of money management and became a successful businessman and entrepreneur. One of his greatest attributes was good old common sense. This and other qualities made him a wise man. His hobbies included traveling all over the world with his wife, friends and family and ranching in Southern Utah. Always an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he strived to be a good Christian. He served two full time missions. The first was as a young Elder to the Japanese people in Hawaii and the other was to the Stockholm, Sweden temple with his wife. He served on several High Councils and twice as a Bishop. The second time he was called to serve as Bishop, he was 75 years old. As the Bishop in Springdale, he and his wife loved to visit the widows in their homes, as well as the other members in the ward. He appreciated all the callings he was given and one that he really enjoyed was being a Sealer in the St George Temple. He cherished the moment, when surrounded by his family, President Gordon B Hinckley conferred the sealing power upon him. He was also blessed to have the opportunity to seal several of his grandchildren in marriage.

He has a large posterity and many friends. He will be sorely missed. He is preceded in death by DeBeth, his beautiful wife of 71 years. He is survived by his children: Vernon G.W., Glenn S., Julie Spencer (Jerry) and Gina Johnstun; 22 grandchildren; and 62 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Springdale LDS Ward Chapel, 1584 Zion Park Blvd., Springdale, Utah. A viewing will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at the chapel, just prior to the service. Interment will be at the St. George City Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, 435-673-4221. For condolences, full obituary, and funeral listings please visit our website www.metcalfmortuary.com.

Vernon and DeBeth were members of a group called the sixteeners. They started as young people in the 16th Ward in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had a fabulous time together. They met monthly for over 40 years. He was the last surviving male. My Mother Emma Louisa Parry Shingleton is still alive as is Mrs. Smith. My parents loved Vernon and DeBeth. I hope you children realize what great parents you have.
