Uncle Vernon, you didn’t wait for this world to become good and beautiful and kind, you made it so. Your warmth and generosity filled the room. My siblings and I didn’t get to see you often, but when we did, we talked about it for weeks. Your mammoth hands eclipsed mine in a handshake, even when I was grown. You were a teacher, through and through. Your wisdom guided me in more ways than I ever told you. And as I reflect on our time together, I’m reminded that when the sun is gone, its light still fills the sky for a while.

Vernon touched my life in so many ways. His family lived down the road when I was a kid and he taught in Fenton. He served as my mentor teacher at South Cameron when I was finishing my degree to become an ag teacher. I learned so much from him. His legacy lives on, not just through his family but through the thousands he influenced through his life.

Me McCain was my sixth grade teacher at AA Nelson Elementary. He would tease me because my maiden name is Sandefer, he would say you better watch out for those Sandefer girls, I’m married to one! He was such a kind and nice man. I was blessed to have had him for my teacher! Praying God continues to comfort the family.

With love to the man who always identified himself when he called as "you favorite Uncle, Vernon McCain". He was right, and what a man to have for an uncle!! One of a kind, good-hearted, generous with his time & attention to all. The little brother who always called my Mama his "baby sister". Rest in God, favored one among uncles. Watch over your dear family--we will all miss you dearly.

Vernon and Jolene McCain, the best friends one couild be honored to have, were always serving their
God in their lives, their church and the community. Their examples in life have had a positive influence on many. Vernon was devoted to his family. His eyes would light up when he spoke about any one of his children and their families. Lives he touched in the classroom will carry his legacy on for years to come. He went above and beyond a teacher's job to assure his students had equal opportunities for success. My family has been richly blessed by Vernon, Jolene and their family. My prayer is for God to grant them peace, comfort and strength through this time of great sorrow,
