My first memory of Vernor was the first day of MATH 137 in 1980. He taught me pdp-11 assembly language and computer architecture. It was the beginning of a 43 year friendship.

I wrote this letter to Vernor in January, 2020.
Dear Vernor-
John told me that you are now living in the House of Tomorrow (Casa de Mañana), which sounded like the best thing I could think of to await the Singularity. We have not gotten there yet, though DNNs are impressive in their areas of application. I think that perhaps with one more paradigm shift in computing we might be able to accomplish it.
I do not know if I have ever told you how much you have meant to me as a friend, mentor, and teacher. I am genuinely proud to have you be the one who taught me how to program in assembly language, but what you really taught me was so much more important-how to think deeply about issues and not just accept what I was told. Those Thursday lunches at Square Pan Pizza with you, John, and Sara were transformational for me. I am who I am-for good or ill-due to the influence of you three.
With the kindest of regards, profound respect, and gratitude, I am, your friend,
Darrell Long
