Victor Chock, owned and managed this deli-market for many years

My memory of cousin Victor was that he was a loving son, dutiful husband and caring father. My earliest memories of him were of him reading comics and running around in camouflage. He was the grandson of Bing Chock (originally Wing Fay), who bought Sunlite Market (4718 E Kings Canyon) in 1947, and gradually brought the family over beginning in the 1930s. Victor loved to read and earned a B.A. in History from Fresno State in the 1970s. He had also started law school, but his religious convictions and desire to help his parents at the store became a priority. Victor worked as co-manager and co-owner of Sunlite Market for many years. A born-again Christian, he also attended Chinese Baptist Church. After his father (Hin Chock) and my grandmother (Lee Bot Chock) retired from the store, Victor and his father traveled around Southern California and worked hard at other Chinese restaurants. Eventually Victor's brothers helped buy his parents a home, and Victor looked after both his parents up to into their 90s. Victor always seemed affable, cheerful, even when taciturn, and it was with the help of their family, particularly Muoi, that I was able to recuperate more quickly from my cancer operations. His side hobbies, such as amateur hunter, sports enthusiast, and cooking were also home-grown traits. Looking up to him as I was growing up, he will always represent the Chinese ideal of a loving son towards his parents--and a quintessentially kind person. I will miss Victor's warm smile and friendly greeting at work, he always made sure to mention my husband and ask how he was doing. Without Victor's presence at National Raisin Company, there is a real void. To his beloved wife and family, you are truly in our thoughts and prayers.
