Victor PRUS Obituary

Published by Monteal Gazette on Mar. 11, 2017.
PRUS, Victor Marius
Victor Marius Prus, architect, passed away in Montreal on January 21, 2017, in his 100th year. For 68 years, he was the loving husband of fellow architect Maria Fisz Prus. He is mourned by extended family and friends. Born in Poland, Victor was educated at the Warsaw Technical University (Dipl. Arch. 1939). During World War II, he served with the Polish forces in the Middle East and as a Flying Officer with the Royal Air Force 305 (P) Squadron. He was twice awarded the Polish Cross of Valour. He obtained the Dipl. Ing. Arch. (M. Arch.) at the University of Liverpool (1947), and taught and practised in London before immigrating to Canada with Maria in 1952. After working in Canada and conducting research with Buckminster Fuller at Princeton, he set up practice in Montreal. As Principal of Victor Prus, Architect and Victor Prus & Associates, Architects & Urbanists, together with his wife and others he designed outstanding buildings. Representing a distinguished career in Canada and abroad, his principal and award- winning works include the Palais des Congrès, Montreal; the Canada/France Astronomical Observatory, Hawaii; Le Grand Théâtre de Québec, Québec; Centaur Theatres One and Two, Montreal; Montreal Metro Stations Bonaventure, Mont-Royal, and Langelier; and Rockland Shopping Centre, Montreal. Victor was dedicated to the development of architecture notably as a visiting professor at McGill University's School of Architecture, and the École d'architecture in Québec. He was a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, an Academician of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, and was honoured by L'Ordre des architectes du Québec with their Médaille du Mérite. A man of enormous curiosity and creativity, Victor savoured the beauty of nature in his sailing, painting, and bird watching. Dog walks were an enjoyable part of his daily routine. A celebration of Victor's life will be held at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, 16 Pacific Avenue, Senneville, QC, on Saturday, March 25, 2017, at 1:00 p.m., with reception to follow. The family wishes to thank the staff of the CLSC and Health Access for their care. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Montreal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) would be appreciated.

Victor was a friend and a fine architect. Although our lives went separate ways, I retained fond memories of working with him on several projects, most memorable of which was the wonderful job he did for Centaur Theatre. My condolences to his wife the equally wonderful Maria.

A true and gentle man. In his quiet way, instrumental to my upbringing. Sorely missed.

Victor Prus was my favorite modernist architect in Québec. He was in the movement, but he also stood outside of it, with his very personal signature. His smaller pavilions and housing projects and his metro stations show his deep understanding of the raw power of materials, his intimate understanding of structure, and his capacity to emphasise either lightness or weight. What a self-assured, brave and intuitive explorer... The real deal.

I can only imagine the loving wealth he must have brought to his close family and friends, and how much he will be missed by them.

My profound sympathy for all those he leaves behind. I hope you can find a little bit of solace in the solid, lasting and joyful work he leaves behind for all the world to experience, for decades and decades to come.

As the current steward of Victor & Maria's Spong/Raleigh Island, the haven they cherished after years of war and turmoil, I thought it appropriate to share a photo here, along with my sincere condolences. Also my appreciation for their having selected me to be its next owner.
