Victor B. Stevens Jr.

As his first cousin, Sunny, as we knew him, and I grew up together. He was a giver and not a taker. He helped my parents build our first home and was known for how many egg salad sandwiches he could eat. His mother, aunt Mickey to me, made the best Italian meatballs in the neighborhood. His father was 16 lbs. at birth and a really big man who worked at American Steel and Wire. Sunny distinguished himself in his college career, and in many other ways too numerous to mention. On several occasions when I was still actively teaching I brought my classes to visit the USS. Constitution. His name is on the brass plaque in the Captain's cabin. My mother, Ruth, his aunt, passed to me several family pictures and documents, pursuant to his life which I would be more than happy to share.
He is in our thoughts and prayers.

Vic touched many lives over his 75 years. His wit, warmth,patriotism and generosity won't soon be forgotten. His funeral on Tuesday (8/26/09) showed the depth of warmth and affection so many held for Vic. Vic left no close family members but as one speaker at the church said "WE are Vic's family." The flag service by the U.S. Navy at the church was stirring. The luncheon at Vic's beloved PNI Club continued the celebration of Vic's life by by friends young and old. The open box of Vic's favorite cigars was such a lovely touch. Kudos must go to two of Vic's closest friends,Tom McGreavy and Tommy Zemaitis, for doing such a wonderful job for such a wonderful guy. I would hope that this website will be made a permanent one so that photos and comments can be added as time goes by.

Vic was a great person and true friend of mine for many years. As the years past, we did not see each other as often but we always exchanged Christmas cards to keep in touch. I will miss that greatly.

My heart goes out to his family & friends. You can be sure that he will be at the helm of the Ol Ironsides in heaven & will be welcomed by his many friends that have gone before him.

God bless you Vic. You will not be forgotten.

I'll never forget going to visit Vic at the Boynton with Tommy. He was honestly one of the nicest guys I've ever known, I will miss him very much.

Dear Friends of Victor,

At age 14, I fell "in love" with Vic (1954). When he became Commander of Old Ironsides (1 month before I married the love of my life)I was so proud that I "sort of knew him". He recently moved into my apt. bldg. and I told my grandson about him. Mike (age9) was doing some computer research in anticipation of meeting Victor to hear his "story" 1st hand. Vic, also, was happy to meet Mike. Sadly, this never happened. God bless Vic. I am so happy to have met him again.
