Viktor Dewar Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 4, 2014.
Viktor Innes Dewar "Vik Voltage"
1956 - 2014

Viktor I. Dewar, born November 17, 1956, left this earth peacefully in the very early morning of April 21, 2014. His loving companion Kay Johnson was by his side. Viktor is preceded in death by his mother Raissa Ivanova Dewar who died in 2008 and his father John Clark Dewar who died in 1964 when Viktor was just a young boy. Viktor Dewar is
survived by his sister Alexandra Laurie Dewar and her husband Yuri Grigoriev; brother John McKenzie Dewar and his wife Irina Borisovna Dewar, along with their three children Julia, Thomas, and Catherine.

Viktor grew up in a Pasadena home graced with music, art and the Russian culture. Viktor's many passions included art, photography, airplanes, trains, and music. He loved to play the drums and was especially talented on the congas. He enjoyed carpentry and loved working with his tools. Viktor's true passion, however, was surfing which was how he earned the name "Surfer Vik."

In his early days, he and his good friend Roger Renick were known as the "Poodle Brothers," Vik with his long blonde curls and Roger with a darker full head of hair. They had many surf trips together including several down the coast of Baja and countless trips to Jalama, Radar Towers and then sneaking into Trestles and Cottons by walking the railroad tracks past

President Nixon's "Western White House." He lived and worked in various surf communities including Oceanside, Huntington Beach, Venice, Malibu, and Oxnard making friends everywhere he went. His last years were lived out in Newbury Park with his girlfriend and life companion, Kay.

Viktor inspired people in so many ways with his ability to make friends in an instant. He was truly "one of a kind" with a great knack for entertaining people with songs, dance, stories, jokes, and his play on words. On any day you could get a hug and joke from Vik. He made people laugh wherever he went. His energetic personality also earned him the name "Vik Voltage." He was overjoyed the day he was issued a new driver's license with "Vik Voltage" next to his name.

It is no coincidence that Viktor passed at the twilight of Easter. Easter was a special time for the Dewar family and it was always celebrated in grand Russian style. The oceans of heaven have opened to receive Viktor and give him back his strength, vitality, and new life. He will suffer no more.

One of Viktor's many sayings would be "Never say good-bye on the threshold." So instead, we will bid him farewell and look for the blue eyed blonde haired crazy surfer we knew as "Surfer Vik." If we look hard, we will surely see him as he catches the perfect "southern hemi" then raises his hand to wave back to us as he swings his board around and swims away to catch the next one.

A memorial and "paddle out" in Vik's honor will be held 12 noon on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Silverstrand Beach in Oxnard, California. Another gathering will be held in Pasadena at a later date. For details and more information, please e-mail Laura Hernandez at [email protected].

Viktor popped into my head last night. We hadn't seen each other since we were 11 or 12. He was an energetic redhead with a pair of drumsticks. When he played drums at a Willard talent show (and even tossed a stick in the air, and caught it), he was an instant rock star among the elementary school kids.

My sympathies to Viktor's family and friends.

Vic, thank you for taking me in when I could not feed myself, your caring for me when above and beyond. Court captivator, sand seducer, and I can not remember the rest of your mantra, but all those things you were, a better friend than I, Peace in Christ's Love..pete
