1930 – 2013

Virginia Lee Cornwell, age 82, passed peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, January 13, 2013. She was born on June 14, 1930 (Flag Day), in Granite City, IL.

Virginia was a resident of Canyon Country, CA for 50 years, and was a housewife and a teacher's aide at Honby Elementary School where she gave her time and assistance to students who needed extra attention. In her spare time, Virginia loved to garden and she cultivated delicious tomatoes and other vegetables. She was also famous for her chocolate chip and snickerdoodle cookies, which her children, grandchildren and their friends devoured every time they came to visit. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, and visiting with friends and family.

Virginia is survived by her husband of 54 years, Howard; daughter Connie Hernandez (Luis); son Fred Cornwell (Mary), granddaughter Brooke Dupuis; grandsons: Hayden and Zachary Cornwell and Eric and Sean Hernandez; sisters: Bea, Olive, and Krethy; brother Dean; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Virginia was a vibrant and truly selfless individual who was loved by all who knew her. "Virginia, you will be missed but not forgotten!"

Funeral services for Virginia will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 18, 2013, at Eternal Valley Memorial Park, 23287 N. Sierra Highway, Newhall, CA 91321.

I had the pleasure of meeting Virginia while she worked at Skyblue Mesa Elementary School several years ago. She was such a wonderful lady who reminded me of my roots growing up in the midwest. After she'd retired, I would occasionally bump into her while grocery shopping, and we would strike up a rather lengthy conversation like she'd never left Skyblue. My heart goes out to her family. Just know that she made a difference in many people's lives.

I was honored to have Virginia as my partner in my classroom at Honby for many years, but I appreciated her as my friend a lot longer. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and her many friends. Karen Thomas-Wyatt

I had the pleasure of working with Virginia for twelve years while teaching at Honby. She was a loving, yet firm task master for all of her charges. Her down to earth manor and delightful humor will be greatly missed.

The Kaldhusdal family is sorry to hear of Virginia's passing. I will always remember Mrs. "C's" good ol' fashion Midwestern hospitality. I remember sitting at her kitchen table on Walnut Street, waiting for her freshly baked, afternoon snack. Her warmth and kindness was just what I needed as an adolescent. She will be greatly missed.
